Mai Tai.

A drink most would savor by the beachside, legs up, tanning their troubles away. The Mai Tai is reminiscent of a sun settling delicately over Dubai high rises and crystal blue waters.

"I've been here a few times...", the girl took off her cap, letting blonde hair fall just past her shoulders. "Never seen you around tho"

Pouring ice into the shaker, a smile grew across my lips. "Fridays are more my thing. And now that y'know that, the next drink's on me", honestly what the hell am I saying? I can't be flirting with customers right now. Not like this. Not while Michael Jackson is screaming at me 'you rocked my world, you know you did' as Seulgi throws it back for our boss Jennie.

great song— not the greatest moment

Her laugh echoed in my ear as she took note of the liquors I brought out. Aged and dark rum.

Usually recipes call for coconut rum, such as Malibu Rum in place of white rum. Between us, I think coconut rum throws the entire drink off. Makes it taste cheap. And grainy. And we don't want that.

So when I brought out two of my favorite brands, Don Q Reserva 7 and Bacardi, the girl titled her head confused by the lack of Malibu Rum customers were familiar with.

A twitch of her brow told me she had questions, so I answered with a laugh. "I know what you're thinking. Where the fuck is the coconut rum? Does this person know what they're doing? What the fuck is this shit"

Stunned that I had (likely) read her mind, her mouth fell open, eyes wide. Trust me, I get it, I do.

"Well... Well I was just gonna ask if it had a different version. Or something similar", her fingers drew patterns over the countertop. Never knew acrylic nails were so distracting... couldn't even focus on what I was doing, scooping up some ice into the shaker.

Now, for the fun part.

Our first ingredient. Orange curaçao. Only about a half ounce of this stuff goes in then—

"Y/N!!!!"

what now... I groaned, not meaning to.

Seulgi came running around the bar, panting, and held me tight by the arm. "W-whiskey" pant "Sour" pant "A-asap". Every word ended in a wheeze. Face damp with sweat.

"Whiskey sour?", I repeated back, grabbing for a clean glass from underneath.

Seulgi nodded frantically.

"Okay. And how many—"

Sure. Just run back to the dance floor without telling me how many drinks you need, because we obviously share the same braincells and I know exactly what you want.

"—Do you need...", our short interaction caused the girl in front of me to giggle.

"Beautiful friendship you got there", she teased, smirking suddenly.

First it was the nails. Now it's the smirk. Love that for myself. Keep getting distracted y/n, why don't you?

"Unfortunately...", my eyes narrowed into the distance. Question after question why I befriended such a crazy bear to begin with. Oh, right. Cause we are more alike than not.

Shaking my head, I continued on with the next steps, adding both types of rum and an ounce of orgeat syrup. A sweet syrup made from almonds, sugar, and rose or orange flower water. Like simple syrup. But fancy.

To add on , a bit of fresh squeezed lime juice went in after to give it that certain 'zing', then shaken cold and strained over a glass full of ice.

that 'zing' what the heck does that even mean, me, be forreal...

Customers were filling up the seats now, all eager and wide-eyed for their Friday night fix.

"Coño, el trabajo me está matando"

"Oh hell nah. Block that goofy ass from snapchat, instagram, tiktok, everything. Period"

"Virgin or no virgin?"

"Excuse me, do any of the drinks contain gluten?"

Characters of every kind come to our bar every night, looking to escape the outer world, to escape its problems. Ties come undone. Jackets thrown off. To each their own unravel at once while given the opportunity.

Nothing matters outside this bar.

So take a sip.

Tell me your story.

We're in no hurry.

"I'm feeling better already", the blonde smirked, head tilted to one side.

I fought back a smile. kun-kun. That sound. The sound of a spark igniting whenever a beloved customer compliments me. Despite many of it being slurred.

"Glad to hear"

Garnishes of pineapple, cherry and mint glitter about the rim. Ah, yes. A tropical sunset worth taking a sip from. No matter the season.

Pushing the drink forward, a part of me will never forget the expression she made as she quietly thanked me, fingers wrapped gingerly around the glass.

The smile finally breaks loose. "Enjoy. . ."

this story isn't meant to be long, rather short and sweet? like a cafe read. something to pass the time. although! although... the next book i'm currently working on will be much longer, more detailed and engaging(?) haha.

also apologies for the slow ass update, cause like 😎 2022 been lit. yUh.

no bartendering tips & tricks today, and no Dreamcatcher crackheaded gc either, unfortunately. my best advice to you is drink some water and get some sunlight LMFAO
