I licked my lips, tasting orange and champagne from the glass beside me. A peculiar time to be having mimosas so late into the evening, is what I'd normally say, but when has life ever been about doing things of predictability.
"I choose. . ." Gahyeon peeked at her hand of three cards. Her glossy lips quirked up before our gazes met. ". . . GREEN!"
dang... outta all these colors you- this is fine.
I rolled my neck around, forcing the tension out. How the heck does a game of UNO get me this stressed out? I mean, literally, this is worse than those trio of drunk guys from somewhere down south dancing to Hannah Montana's - Hoedown Throwdown which had me physically stressed.
I reached for the deck pile and draw a card.
A painful grin bloomed across my face. The number glaring up at us both at the reality of it all. "Be a doll and pick two, bestfriend"
Anger.
Betrayal.
Defeat.
Quite a befitting look for someone so keen on whooping my behind at this game. Or any game, if we're being honest. Gahyeon's an extremely competitive person, so this rush of adrenaline and tableside smack talk is well met.
To add to the theatrics, I held the two cards up to my nose and sniffed them. "You smell that? Yessir. That's the smell of victory baby!" Ok I admit this is all a lil dramatic. Even for me.
But so what.
Gahyeon sipped on her Shirley Temple and glared with pouty lips.
She huffed while going for her punishment, but made a show to pull each card painfully slow back into her hand.
"Listen", she spoke through a forced smile. "This'll be the first and last time we ever play this here. And y'know what─", her finger gestured between us, "─It's because our competitiveness would actually kill these poor innocent people, bestfriend"
"First time I've agreed with you all night... bestfriend"
We stared eachother down. Eyes ablaze in fire. Laced in ice. Thunderous storms and violent winds-
"You shitheads started without me!"
Seulgi...
Among the crowds of people watching our dramatic game of UNO unfold, thus came a loud and boisterous bear, her hands full of popcorn and various snacks.
The crowd cheered when she began passing around the snacks and smiling so wide from ear to ear that it made her eyes disappear. It was a cute sight to witness, for both Gahyeon and I. "Snacks for the audience but none for us?", I teased at Seul. She made a show to bless me her middle finger and devious grin. "I see how it is, Seul"
But someway, somehow, I noticed Gaheyon's hand hiding underneath the table as she (obviously) popped a few kernels in her mouth while the game went on. Someone was playing favorites.
"Uno!"
It goes silent. . .
. . .Then a chorus of ooh and aah's and clapping and someone shaking the literal soul outta my body. "You got this, fam!", a high-pitched voice yelled beside me. Perfume wafting thick through the air. Like sandalwood and amber and bonfires.
Even in the midst of our heated game and my asscheeks clenched tight because of it, my mind drifted yet again to the many possibilities of how I'd turn that intangible perfume... tangible. What'd go in it, what'd it taste like, and how close could I recreate that woody, smoky, primal essence.
i feel, this is beyond any sort of help, my head shook with a smile at the thought.
"That a headshake of defeat or a 'card' up your sleeve, bestie?". Gaheyon's taunt scratched an unfortunate part in my brain. One she'll soon realize is-
"Skip"
"W-what...?"
Gahyeon tilted her head. "I said skip"
did she skip me twice??- wait
Hold on a minute. What is going on here on this day... I could've swore I-
"Uno". Her words swam through my head like the champagne still lingering in my system. "And draw two while you're at it"
Watching Gaheyon place her final card down on the table made it all the more real. The reality that I lost.
Those same people that were cheering and clapping and shaking the literal soul outta me not long ago, immediately fled to my bestfriend's side as she stood atop her chair and bowed to them like a Queen bowing to her servants. "감사합니다! 감사합니다!"
this kid..., I hid a smile behind the glass of leftover mimosa in my hand. Downed the remains of it, and stood.
"No hard feelings, the kid's got spunk. She had you in the first half", a hand squeezed my arm gently. Familiar perfume coursing thicker than before now that there's a face to see.
Obsidian bob with bangs hung over her alluring eyes that settle on hooking you in and keeping you there, if her borderline androgynous features and cool air didn't already do the trick.
My eyes glanced over her quick. "100%. It's like she's a leprechaun, always doing some magic ass shit outta nowhere", I laughed and so did the girl in front of me. "But yea that was a fun game. Lost $50 or whatever, but it's cool"
The girl gave me another squeeze on the arm, laughing, and offered me a drink at the bar.
