"So, should I start calling you Cap now?"

Sam shrugged, looking down at the case the shield was in. "I don't know if I'm going to keep it."

"Steve did leave pretty big shoes to fill. If, if it means anything, he wouldn't have picked you if he didn't think you were capable of carrying the shield."

"It's complicated. That shield, it's legacy..."

"I get it," you said. "But...Can you do one thing for me? Just, hold on to it for a little while before you make up your decision. It's a hard decision, I know, but...I'd hate for you to end up regretting your decision because you made it in haste."

"You mean like Steve did."

You fiddled with your engagement ring. "I don't know that he regrets it. He didn't even...He didn't tell me. And then, when he was back, he wouldn't talk to me."

Sam gave you a soft smile. Steve was an idiot, but he wasn't sure he could say that. You were still fragile. He didn't want to hurt you more. Instead, he said, "It was his loss. You're an amazing woman. If he couldn't see what he had in front of him...Well, he didn't deserve you."

"Sometimes, I think I never deserved him."

His heart ached. "Don't say that. You're incredible. I mean it when I say that anyone would be lucky to have you. I would be lucky to have you."

"You're just saying that 'cause you're my friend."

His smile tightened as he tried to not let his face fall. This wasn't about him. This was about you. "Right. Friend." And that's all he would be. "And, as your friend, I'm morally obligated to do anything to get your smile back on your face."

"You may have to work a long while for that."

"And it'd be worth every second."
