I spent the night in Matthew's apartment. He told me they wouldn't look for me here, yet. He also said that so much had changed in such a short amount of time since I was gone, so he felt that he needed to explain a few things to me.
"People are going to be shocked at first when they see you, so I don't want you to be confused when your there." He told me last night. "I would go to help you but I think it would look suspicious if I disappeared. So I will drop you off early in the morning and then come back before anyone notices I'm gone."
He was planning on waiting until the next day to bring me back to the new society, but I was, and still am, far to anxious and excited to wait another day. I managed to convince him that I would be fine. I listened closely to what he had to say about the way things were running. I did this not only to convince him I would be fine, but becaus I knew if I didn't listen, I would be so confused. I knew he was right.
Everyone will be in shock and probably weirded out that the girl who was supposed to have died, and had her ashes spread of water, was back, talking and breathing as if nothing had ever happened to her. Which it didn't, at least I knew it didn't. Yes I was shot and yes I lost my memory, but I healed, and got my memory back, and I knew that I wasn't dead. I was pretty sure the others didn't know that though.
"So there are obviously no factions." He explained. He told me about the different jobs available and how things were ran. I thought I knew enough by the time we were done.
I went to bed anxious like a kid at Christmas, not that the Abnegation celebrated that holiday, just the Amity. Or how I felt the night of the Choosing Ceremony, except this anxiousness was good, mostly.
We were supposed to leave early in the morning but after Matthew stopped quizzing me, it was almost one in the morning. "We will leave at three in the morning" he said before going to bed. I laid in bed for an hour and a half staring at the ceiling. I was working out the different scenarios of how it would be when my friends saw me again. I finally fell asleep at the last second.
What seemed like ten minutes later, a hand was on my shoulder, gently shaking me awake. "Tris, wake up." A voice urged.
"Ugh," I moaned. "Talk to me in like two hours" I mumbled throwing the covers over my head. I was having a pleasant dream about-well that didn't matter, I just didn't want to get up. Actually that was the first time I have slept in years without having a nightmare that made me wake up screaming.
I heard a sound that was a lot like a groan and a chuckle. "Tris, please get up. We have to go now, or you'll have to wait until tomorrow. We already overslept." The voice said. That woke me up. I opened my eyes and sprung out of bed.
"Why didn't you say so?" I asked. "Let's go!" I ran out of the room, down the hall. "Come on slowpoke!" I yelled behind me. I was so giddy, I wasn't acting like my usual self. Which was fine with me. Matthew chuckled from down the hall.
Once outside, we became quiet. Since it wasn't early morning anymore, that meant that there were people awake and walking around. Finally after what seemed like forever, we made it to Matthew's car. "That was easy." I said.
"Too easy." He replied looking around. "Quick, let's go before someone is looking for me. It's about an hour drive to get there." He says getting in.
I take one last look behind me. I wasn't going to miss this place in the least, I thought. I look at the Bureau. Through one of the windows, I thought I saw a face. Then it disappeas. I turn around and throw myself into the car. Literally. I wince as I land on the stick in the middle.
Matthew just looks at me. "What?" I ask. He shakes his head smiling a little, before starting the car.
As we drive, I look at the scenery. Not much has changed since I've seen it last I recall. We are both silent. But it's a peaceful silence. After what seems like a long time I ask him a question.
"What'll happen if they realize I'm no longer there. What if they know it was you who helped me escape?" I ask.
"Then I'd imagine there will be repercussions." He says solemnly.
"But I thought the Bureau was safe now. If what I did worked, then everyone should be different shouldn't they?" I ask confused. I didn't know why Matthew wanted to leave so early, why he was afraid, but I didn't ask. This time I did.
"Yes, they should be, and they were for awhile." He says. "But around six months ago, things started changing." He explains. Six months ago? That was around the time I firt started remembering small things. "Zeke and I have been trying to figure out what's going on but to no avail." That explains why Zeke was there when I was leaving.
We sit the rest of the way in silence. Twenty minutes later I see the old buildings. Some of them were as I remebered and others were new or restored. "Well, we're here." Matthew says parking the car. "Remember everything I told you, and good luck."
"Thanks for everything." I smile, getting out of the car.
"No problem." He says getting out. "Stay safe." He hugs me, before getting back in the car. As I turn away, he leans out the window and says, "Oh, and Tris? It's great to have you back!" He waves before pulling away. I wave back until I can no longer see him.
It didn't matter that strange things were happening at the Bureau, it didn't matter that everyone may or may not be freaked out by my sudden appearance. When the wind blows, I close my eyes and let it blow over me.
I was finally home...
