Ever since my mother told me she had cancer, I've been doing everything I could to help her. I wasn't going to lose her like I lost Tris. I even had her start staying here on weekends. She told me she wouldn't let me throw away my freedom taking care of her but I didn't mind since it kept my mind off of other things.

"Tobias, really, your being silly." She says lightly. "You can try everything but my cancer is still going to get worse. The only way to cure it is if Caleb and Cara figure out how to make that medicine."

I hang my head defeated. "Well then first thing tomorrow, I am going to talk to them." I say stubbornly. "Anything else you need mother?" I ask making sure her needs were taken care of before I went to bed.

"Tobias, you are such an Abnegation." My mother shakes her head , laughing lightly. "I'm fine, go to sleep." I kiss her goodnight and then go to bed myself. I had a mission tomorrow.

My sleep was dreamless, if not a little restless. I put on my clothes and look at myself in the mirror. I have let my hair grow out and I started working out again. Deciding I look good enough, I go downstairs to check on mother.

"Mother?" I ask. "Are you awake?"

No response.

"Mom? You here?" I shout. I run downstairs and see her laying still on the couch. Mother?" My voice quakes, panicked. I shake her lightly. Nothing. I shake her a lot, shouting at her to wake up. Still nothing. I put two fingers on her neck to check for a pulse. I can feel it, but it's barely there.

"It'll be okay Mommy." I tell her. I haven't called her mommy since I was four but it slips out. I call Christina.

"Hello?" She yawns.

"Christina, it's me, Four." I say urgently.

"Four? What's wrong?" Christina says with the same sudden urgency.

"It's," I choke out. "My mom. She's unconscious, and I don't have any way of getting her anywhere.

"Say no more Four. I'll be there in five, sit tight." Christina assures me.
I knew I could call Christina since she lived a few minutes away and was a terribly fast driver.

Five minutes later Christina pulls up to the door and rushes in. Together we get my mom in her car and rush off to the hospital.

When we get there the nurse spots us and rushes over with a gurney. I carefully lay my mom on it and then look at the nurse expectantly.
I can see several heads looking discreetly our way out of my peripheral.

"What's wrong with her?" I ask frantically. "Why won't she wake up?"

The nurse just shakes her head. She leans into the man next to her and whispers something. Then the man rushes off. She starts to run down the hall with the gurney.

"Hey!" I shout, causing even more heads to turn my way.

"Tobias." Christina attempts to grab my arm, but I shake loose and rush down the hall the way I saw the nurse go. She's my mother and I will be damned if I'm just going to sit and wait like everyone else.

When I get to the end of the hall I see a group of nurses and doctors rushing into a room. "Hey!" I shout again jogging over there. Two people break through the group and walk towards me. I stop and look them over. I recognize them both immediately. Cara and Caleb.

"Tobias, you can't go in there. I'm sorry." Cara puts her arm on my shoulder.

"I have to." I insist moving forward again. A hand grabs my elbow. I turn around, and shake my elbow out of Caleb's grip. I raise my fist and see him flinch. I am brought back to the Bureau so many years ago where I saw Caleb in that hall and he had the clear sign of being recently punched, since all of the bruises were healing, and I knew immediately it was Tris that did it to him, not that I blamed her.

I bring my hand down. "I'm sorry." I whisper. Caleb straightens himself. I look at the ground, suddenly ashamed.

I keep my eyes trained to the floor as I follow Cara and Caleb to one of the offices. Cara closes the door. "Tobias?" She sounds like she is asking a question. I look at her, but not Caleb.

I haven't had any problem looking at him before besides the fact that I have never been fond of him but this time it seems like whenever I do, I see her. Looking at Caleb I see Tris' mouth, Tris' eyes, and Tris' nose and my heart constricts.

"What's wrong with my mother?" I ask.

"We aren't really sure." Cara admits. "We gave her medications to slow the process."

"We think she might be suffering a relapse or may even be allergic to what we gave her." Caleb says.

I almost want to punch him or at least make a remark but I hold back. Caleb is just doing his job and I have bigger things to worry about.

"An allergic reaction?" I ask angrily.

"Well we aren't really sure. Yet." Cara responds.

I rub my face. It's already been a long morning. "Can I at least go and see her?"

Caleb shakes his head. "Not until she's stable."

"So I still can't see even if this may be the last time she's alive?" I asked incredulous.

"Umm, no. I am so sorry Tobias, we are doing everything we can." Cara says apologetically.

"We'll let you know if anything changes." Caleb says almost guiltily.

We walk out of the office and down the way we came. We pass the room they took my mom into and I see through the viewing window a bunch of doctors surrounding a bed and a sliver of a frail women. "Is that my mom?" I mentally wonder. A nurse spots me and closes the curtains. Cara and Caleb lead me away.

Once outside the hospital Cara gives me an awkward hug and Caleb assures me that my mother is in good hands. Then they turn around and go back inside.

"Tobias?" Christina asks silently.

"Thank you for bringing us here." I tell her. "I think I'm just going to go for a little walk."

"Okay." She nods solemnly.

I see her get into her car and drive away before walking in the opposite direction.
