Ciardia

"Kaz wait up!" Ciardia called after the boy who was slipping through the crowded streets quickly. Ciardia had struggled with keeping up with him and his outrageous plans, but oddly enough he always took time to wait for her.

"Cia- come on or we will be late and the boss will be mad," Kaz replied slipping his fingers around her wrist, helping her through the mass of people. "I swear one of these days I'm going to lose you."

"Impossible, you're stuck with me forever."  Kaz had only rolled his eyes. Soon the two teens found their way to the entrance to the home of the dregs.  It held in great contrast to the parts of the city they first roamed only a few years back. The barrel had become home to the two, whether they liked it or not, both had debts to pay and both were stuck doing the dirty work of powerful men and women that refused to get their hands dirty.

"Brekker." Per Haskell called, the two were only in the building of the dingy club for a few seconds. Haskell was waiting. "Is it done?"

"We sank it to the bottom of the ocean," Kaz replied, his face cold. It usually was when he talked to the leader of the dregs.

"Wonderful! Hear that boys! Brekker and his girl earned you all a warm meal!" Ciardia gave the man a glare but Kaz gently elbowed her. Kaz had stressed it enough not to get on Per Haskell's bad side. It always meant death when you angered Per Haskell. She just knew that if she stuck by Kaz's side, no harm could ever come to her.

[Present]

Kaz dropped the remaining funds the four had left onto the wooden wagon. They had taken refuge in an old barn to figure out their next move. "Is this all we have left?" Inej asked glancing between the group. She was in pain and all Ciardia could do was ease it, she felt useless not being able to help more. she wished she practiced more. "Jesper my bag."

Jesper reached over to grab her small pouch, holding it out for her as she lifted her shirt to see her wound. "Mother of saints-" Jesper gaged looking away from it quickly as possible. Kaz and Ciardia watched from a distance as she began to clean her wound.

"It's not healing on its own. I need to stitch it." Inej explained, her sole focus on her stomach.

"How long before you travel?" Kaz asked looking away.

"Not long. Where?"

"Ketterdam."

"Kaz-" Ciardia began but he raised a hand to stop her. She gave an odd look towards Jesper and Inej. Kaz looked disappointed.

"Between our dwindling funds, lack of time and conflicting interests." He glanced at Inej as he said that last part. Ciardia had not known why Kaz was truly upset at her, but she could tell he was holding a small grudge. "It's time we cut our losses." He exited the barn soon after.

"I guess the bastard misses the barrel," Jesper said, looking between the two girls. "Dia, you should probably go make sure he doesn't kill anyone."

"Will you be okay?" She had asked Inej.

"Go. I'll be fine." Inej replied giving her a small encouraging smile. Ciardia returned it, following Kaz outside.

Ciardia followed Kaz to the small makeshift fireplace that was there before them. he stretched his bad leg out, giving it a small massage. "Need me to..."

"No."

"For someone who has a heartrender at their disposal, you sure like to ignore that power." Ciardia sat beside him, watching as he rubbed his leg. He didn't respond. "You okay?"

"No."

"Wanna talk about it?"

"No." Kaz finally looked up to her, then back to the barn. "Why aren't you helping Inej?"

"She's stubborn." Kaz rolled his eyes, but he never turned his head away.

"Kirigan will be after you when we get back. He knows you are with me, he'll turn the city upside down to find you." Kaz finally explained his worries, Ciardia had only sighed, she knew he was right. Kirigan knows she is alive and well now. He won't stop looking for her.

"We can deal with that later. Right now let's just focus on getting home, alive." Kaz only nodded, but she could tell his mind was already thinking of ways to hide her. "Anyways- let's go find something to eat."

Kaz sighed and stood up with his cane in hand. "Jesper can do it."

"Jesper is playing nurse."

"Of course he is."

"There is like nothing out here to hunt," Ciardia complained, they had been out in the woods for what felt like hours but they were only out looking for thirty minutes.

"Probably cause you keep complaining about nothing being out here," Kaz remarked giving her a playful smirk. There was her Kaz. Dirty hands were gone, Kaz Breker was present, but Kaz Rietveld was shinning through.

"Or you just got worse at finding food." She replied back bumping his shoulder. He let out a laugh. She rarely heard that sound anymore, oh how she missed it.

The two ended up in a shoulder-bumping contest as they trudged throw the forest. Unfortunately for Ciardia, she managed to trip over a discarded log, and bring Kaz along with her.

"You are an idiot." He rolled his eyes, he was just above her, either hand on the other side of her head. She could feel his breath glaze her skin as he breathed in and out.

"But I'm your favourite idiot." Kaz had only rolled his eyes before they fell into a comfortable silence.

Neither one of them had made a move to get up, and the strange closeness of the two made her nervous. The last time she had seen Ka this close to anyone was before the incident. After he fell into a "nobody can touch me" persona and the gloves became a trademark for him.

"Kaz-" She whispered, but he didn't answer, instead he leaned down. He hesitated, before placing a gentle kiss on her lips. Kaz pulled away, and quickly as the fell, he was upon his feet.

Ciardia sat there dumbfounded. Did Kaz just kiss me?  Why did I like it so much?  Kaz only stood silently, his eyes scanning the woods in front of them. "Jesper can go find food." That was all he said, holding his hand out for her to take. She did, her eyes not leaving him. He was now ignoring the possibility of a conversation about the event that just occurred.

"Ye-yeah. I guess."

Ciardia was once again, left speechless by Kaz Brekker.
