Chapter 5
I slept for most of the plane ride. If I wasn’t doing that, I was either crying or eating candy. I exited the plane, and followed the signs to baggage claim. I grabbed my 2 very big horse suit cases and my one small red one. Then, I made my way over to a woman in a button down shirt, jeans, and sneakers. She had shoulder length, curly blonde hair, and she was about my height. She was holding up a sign that said, ‘Ashley Carter’. I smiled at her and waved.
“So you’re the famous Ashley then? Hi, I’m Deborah Brown, but you can call me Debby. I’ll be your new trainer! Let’s load these in the truck and then we can go and get Talia aye?” she rambled to me. I grinned and nodded. I liked her already.
We had to take a shuttle bus out to the very back of the parking lot where she kept the truck and trailer. They were freaking huge! She called this thing a truck?! It was a freaking semi for crying out loud! And the trailer looked to be larger than Kathleen’s, about 42 feet. It was black and silver, and had pictures of barrel racers on it. I went around to the other side and there was a picture of Talia and me, the one that I had taken about 5 weeks ago in the paddock! Underneath was a picture of me going around 2nd at Worlds, summer of 2012. In scribed was “Ashley Carter and Too Close For Comfort.” I tuned to look at Debby in awe. “Why am I up there?” I ask her. She chuckles, “All of our riders are up there.” I turned to look at the others. There were 4 more. Amanda Jameson, Kristen Kelly, and Christina Black. “The other girls have already arrived at the sables. Now let’s go and get Talia!”
We climbed in the semi and drove down to the designated area. After signing a couple papers, I was able to go and get her from her stall. She nuzzled me with affection and I kissed her eye. I took her off the plane and over to Debby who was talking on her cell phone. I overheard her conversation a bit, “Yep- we’re just getting her horse. She seems really nice! Yep- be there in an hour.” She ended the call and turned around to face me. She walked over and let Talia sniff her before she pet her neck.
“You’re beautiful girl.” She murmured. I smiled and we walked to the back of the trailer to load her in. She walked in easily and I hooked her up to the trailer tie. She began to munch out of her hay bag. We locked the doors and climbed up into the semi once again and we drove out of the airport. She turned on the radio and my we listened to country music for a bit.
“So what exactly have you won?” she asked me.
“Umm… I won Youth Worlds title in the 1D and I got a saddle and trailer out of that. But I never really used the trailer since Kathleen has a nicer on of her own. I won 1st overall in the open and Youth in Canada too. And then pretty much 1st every time at a local show, unless I knock or my hat accidentally falls off.” I concluded.
“So you’re pretty good then aye?” she asks. Gosh, I love British accents.
“Umm, I guess so…” I trail off. I don’t really like to brag, but Talia and I are really good.
“When we get to the stables, the other trainer and I have to have a little chat with the 4 of you about something that we received in the mail. But it’s a secret so I can’t tell you just yet.”
“Erm, okay.”
We finished the ride to the stables in silence. The whole plan was to put Talia in her new field, make sure she got along with the other horses, and then we would talk to the trainers and other girls. Then, I would head to my dorm room.
Before I knew it, we were pulling into this beautiful campus. I would have a room near the stables, since most of my classes were there anyways. I enrolled to become a Vet.
Anyways, the grass was so luscious. The buildings were all made out of brick and glass. I looked to my right and there were a bunch of students lounging on park benches or near the fountain. To my right was this HUGE stable. It was like the classic red barn. All the paddocks were surrounded by a white fence. There were ponds in them like at Kathleen’s. We pulled in next to the barn and I jumped out in excitement. I didn’t care if I looked like a 3 year old, this place was freaking cool!
Debby walked round back and opened the doors. I walked in and un-hooked Talia and led her out. She looked around snorting, her ears perked. We then took her over to a field and took off her travel wraps, before letting her run free. She trotted around, acting all prissy. Then she took off into a lope and then came back to a halt right at the fence near me. I giggle and reached my hand over to pet her nose. She walked closer, let me kiss it, and then walked away again. Debby burst into laughter, and I heard a new voice come up from behind.
“So I’m assuming that you’re Ashley and that was Talia?”
I turned to look at the voice. Like in the movies, I started from the feet and made my way up. He was wearing a pair of black rubber boots and some wrangler jeans. He had a white ‘wife beater’ shirt on and had a silver chain necklace. Then I reached his face. Dayum, he was attractive. But he was also like 25 by the looks of it. He stuck out his hand.
“Hey, I’m Trey.” I shook it with ease.
“Ashley.” I smiled up at him. Debby came up and slapped my bare shoulder.
“Trey is our other trainer. Trey, are the other girls inside?” she asked him. He nodded his head and we made our way inside. The barn was gorgeous. All of the stalls were wooden and there we carvings of the horses names in them. There were only 4 stalls. The names on top were, ‘Talia, Dream, Charm, and Lucy’. We turned a corner and we were in a room that looked almost identical to the viewing room and Kathleen’s. The only difference is that we weren’t looking into the arena. We were looking into Talia’s paddock. I’m assuming that the other 3 horses in there belonged to the girls. Speaking of which, the all turned to look at me.
“Hey! I’m Kristen. Kristen Kelly! My horse is the grey appaloosa over there! Her name is Dream.” She spoke quickly in her British accent. I grinned at her. She had long brown hair like me, and her eyes were a bright blue. She had a cute button nose and she looked to be about 18 like me. In fact, they all looked 18. She wore a pair of jean short shorts, cowboy boots, and a frilly tank top like mine.
“I’m Amanda. My horse, Charm, is the bay short quarter horse eating grass. Fat-ass.” She grinned at me. Amanda had medium black hair and a lip piercing. She wore black jeans with cowboy boots and a red tight tank top.
The last girl looked me over before speaking up, “Christina. Lucy is my horse, buckskin quarter horse.” She said curtly. Jeez, what crawled up her ass and died?! Amanda and Kristen rolled their eyes at her. Christina looked like one of those Barbie’s out of the store. Her long blonde hair was curled to perfection. She was wearing eye liner and mascara, and had on some lip gloss. She was wearing white high wasted short shorts and a hot pink tight fitting tank top. I smiled at her and she just looked at me.
“Christina, play nice.” Debby scolded. Christina gave me a forced smile and when Debby and Trey weren’t looking, she rolled her eyes at me and scowled. I rolled my eyes back and we all sat down around the table. Debby cleared her throat.
“So a few days ago, I received a call from the England Barrel Racing Association. Apparently they got word that Barrel Racing will be added into the Olympics!” she cheered. We all gasped.
“But there’s a catch…” Trey said slowly.
“You need to have a part UK citizenship.” Debby finishes. My heart sank.
“So… Ashley can’t go?” Christina asks, grinning.
“Not unless she takes the test to get the part UK citizenship.” She says. Christina’s smile shatters, and I sat up in my seat a little higher.
“Looks like I’m taking the test then.” I say, grinning at Trey and Debby.
Picture on the side is Debby!
