Chapter 25

“Ladies and gentleman, please fasten your seat belt as we begin our decent. Thank you for flying with Canada Airlines.” The captain spoke over the loud speaker. My seat belt was already done up so I turned off my laptop and placed it into my bag, then tucked it under the seat.

Half an hour later, we were finally getting off the plane and going to baggage claim. Following all the directions, I made it there and grabbed my one small suitcase. “Welcome to Canada, miss.” A man in uniform tipped his hat to me, smiling politely. “Thank you!”

Wandering around the halls until I finally found the exit, I was expecting to grab a taxi and go. But with my family, there was no way that that could ever happen.

“ASHLEY CARTER!” I heard a familiar scream from behind me. I whipped around in time to be tackled to the ground by a short little girl. She picked herself off of me, grinning like a Cheshire cat.

“Hey EllaBella. I sooo haven’t missed you.” I teased, adding a wink in. She shook her head at my cheekiness before I pulled her into another bone crushing hug. We rocked back and forth like that until I hear someone clear their throat. We pulled away and I was suddenly engulfed again, but this time by Nathan. He faked sobbed into my shoulder, “Thank God you’re home, I missed you so much, I just couldn’t deal with Ella. Let’s get drunk together like old time, kay? Wash away the worries.”

I laughed at that saying. We had been saying ‘Wash away the worries’ since I first started drinking, after he caught his girlfriend cheating on him and after me and my parents got into a huge fight. Needless to say, it worked.

“Awe, you missed me? Thanks bro, I missed you too. And maybe not tonight, but boxing day? Invite everyone like old time, and maybe if it’s okay with mom, we can bring Ella too?” I whispered into his shoulder. Ella had been begging us to take her with us forever so she wouldn’t be left out, but Nathan and Kathleen didn’t want her to, Nathan because he found that she was a brat, and Kathleen because she thought that Ella was too young, which is true. But she’s 16 now, old enough I would say.

I heard him groan into my shoulder. Pulling away I looked into his eyes. “Yes. Now no complaining.” I scolded. He cracked a smile before muttering, “Yes mom.”

After Nathan, Kathleen pulled me into a hug as well, and then Lily and Kelsey. We then made our way to the truck and all squished in. Now for the journey home.

One hour, 6 sandwiches, and sore throats from belting the lyrics to a bunch of country songs, we finally pulled into the driveway. I let out a mini squeal and immediately regretted it, making a hand fly up to my throat from the pain. Everyone laughed at me as I jumped out of the truck, sprinted into the house (after kicking off my shoes) and flew into my bedroom, engulfing the scent of Sweet Pea, and pounced onto the bed.

“Home sweet home,” I murmured into the comforter.

I head a small knock on the door and Kathleen appeared with her eyes glistening with tears and a smile on her face. She walking in and sat on the edge of the bed.

“I just wanted you to know that I am so proud of you, for going to England, for winning those races, for being in a relationship, for trusting more people, and for making friends. I know that’s hard for you, and I’m just so happy for you. I love you so much.” She finished, pulling me into a soft and sweet hug before continuing, “It hasn’t been the same since you’ve left. No I’m not trying to convince you to come back, but I mean, I think that Nathan and Ella are finally getting along, I think that they decided to look up to you. You’re such an amazing girl Ashley.”
