Sophie tapped her pen against her textbook in a rapid pattern, eyes boring into the clock in her third period class. Lunch was next and she couldn't wait to see Fitz. He had been on a trip to Hawaii for two weeks with his family and today was his first day back. He promised to bring gifts, and although he wasn't the best gift giver, it was the thought that counts, right?
"Sophie? Hello? Mrs. Brewer called on you." Dex nudged his elbow into her side. She quickly looked up at her math teacher.
"I'm so sorry- Er l- What was the question?"
"Sophie your grades are already falling behind. If you keep this day dreaming up I'll have no choice but to fail you." Mrs. Brewer responded.
Sophie's cheeks flushed with heat and heads swiveled to stare at her. The bell rang, luckily, before she had to respond. She quickly grabbed her books, shoved them into her bag, and ran out of the classroom. Only ten minutes until she'd see him. Five minutes to walk to the lunch room. Three minutes to push her way through the lunch crowd entering the cafeteria. Two minutes to find him.
On minute eight she was so excited she had to keep herself from yelling out his name. In her flurry of emotions, she wasn't watching where she was going and smacked striaght into a wall. Then the wall moved. And she realized in embarrassment that instead she ran into a human torso. A nice, firm, muscled torso. A boy's torso.
"Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry, I'm so cl-"
She looked up to see the most famous smirk of the school. Her apologies died on the end of her tongue.
"Oh. You."
"Oh. Me." He smirked wider. "Didn't think you were the type of girl to fall for me - almost quite literally." He motioned to his chest and winked at Sophie when she followed his hands.
She quickly looked up and glared at his face. What a stuck up-
"Not the type of girl? Oh please, I bet you don't even know my name."
"Wanna bet?"
Sophie put her hands on her hips and stared up at him.
"Go on then. What's my name?"
He smirked again. What a loser. Didn't he know how to make his face do anything different. He opened his mouth to respond before his eyes glanced behind Sophie. He quickly shut his mouth and formed a different word than what he was originally going to say.
"Suzie isn't it?" With that he turned around and walked off. Weird.
"Why were you talking to Keefe? I thought I told you I didn't want you to talk to guys like him."
The voice of the boy she had been looking for sounded from behind her. And he didn't sound pleased.
Sophie whirled around to face Fitz. She smiled at him, but he didn't return it.
"Fitz! You're back!"
"I'm gone for two weeks, and you're already chasing after other boys?"
"No Fitz it was an accident, I ran into him and-"
"I saw what happened Sophie. I'm not blind."
"Then why are you mad? I don't understand.."
"Forget it. Just try to not flirt with my friends, okay? Maybe just don't hang around them at all. They tend to get jealous of what I have and try to take it for themselves."
Sophie was speechless. His smile returned though, and it melted her heart. He'd never said it before, but she could tell just from his smile that he loved her.
"Now, let me show you the gift I bought you." He pulled his backpack off his shoulder where he had it hanging and unzipped the largest pouch. Inside contained yet another bag, this one paper, and he opened it revealing about twenty identical pens with the words Maui, Hawaii written in cursive along the front.
"One for each of my friends. Including my girlfriend." He smiled warmly at her and handed her one. She rolled it between her fingers and tried not to frown. He had given her a gift, she should be grateful. She was grateful. She smiled and encircled her arms around him.
"Thank you. I love it." She looked up at his beautiful teal eyes which she could hardly look into without flushing red. "I love you." He smiled and kissed her forehead, but made no response. Just as he always did. A kiss on the forehead and then he moved onto another topic.
But maybe he just wasn't ready yet. She should give him time. Right?
Right.
"Well, I'm going to go eat lunch with my friends. You coming over for dinner tonight?"
No offer to eat lunch with him, but it's not like she could ask to sit with him. He'd just tell her, again, how he didn't want her around his friends. I guess it's for the best.
"Uhm, yeah. Sure." Her voice slowly trailed off as he walked away without listening to her answer.
Dex and Biana had lunch next period, which left her with Marella. Sadly Marella was out with the flu today, so that left her with the empty table near the trash cans. Just because she dated one of the popular kids didn't mean she herself was a popular kid. Not by a long shot.
She sat her brown, faux leather backpack with painted butterflies on the table and sat down as far away from the trash cans as was physically possible. Sadly that was only a few feet. She unzipped her backpack and went to grab her lunch. Her lunch, that of course on this wonderful day, wasn't in her bag.
Crud.
As she zipped her bag back with a frown, the shadow of a person sat down in front of her. She mustered up a sweet smile and met the face of her new companion.
And as if things couldn't get any worse she met the ice blue eyes of Keefe Hecking Sencen.
"Sup Suzie?"
