After the funeral I swing by Isabelle's house for the last time. I give her and Storm a huge hug.
"Thank you for taking us in, even though you didn't know us and expected no payment." I tell them.
"Wait, we are getting no payment?" Isabelle asks in confusion.
I quickly pick up all our clothes from the floor of the spare room. And a turquoise book, not unlike the ones I use at school, filled with scribbly writing.
Waiting outside is Autumn, Amber, Kaitlin and Jeremy.
"I can send you home now. I will close the portal permanently so your mother never stumbles across the garden. But I will give you a way to always come back." Amber says, quietly, and gloomily.
She hands us both two glass bottles fastened with a cork. Inside is gleaming, glittering white fairy dust, like snow.
"Just sprinkle it anywhere, and it will create a temporary portal to the fairy world. As long as you believe we are there, as long as you believe we exist, it will work. Come get a refill anytime." Amber tells us.
Autumn hesitates for a moment, before hugging me tightly.
"I'm sorry for the way I acted." She whispers.
"I think I can forgive you." I smile. "How's your wing?"
"The doctors said I'd never be able to fly properly again, but I don't blame you. You couldn't control it." She shrugs, grimacing.
The person with the big hat from the funeral approaches us.
"That was a really decent thing you did for me, Amber." She whispers. "I tried to kill you and Goldie. You should've had me executed, or imprisoned me."
"I can't lose both sisters." Amber hugs her tightly.
"I'll go to the Rose Garden, it's the furthest, but still within walking distance. I should make it there in three days." Anastasia tells her. "It's much more than I deserve."
Finally, Amber turns to a large hill. She waves her hands and a bright blue door appears in the hill with a pop.
"Goodbye, dear friends." She waves at us.
"Bye, Shelby. Bye Kaitlin. Bye Jeremy." Autumn mimics Amber's hand movements.
"Bye." Anastasia mumbles, awkwardly.
We take a deep breath, open the door and step through to a void full of nothing but pure light as far as the eye could see. We fell downwards, but somehow, we were not afraid. We didn't really fall I guess, but more float. Eventually, we come to another door, exactly like the first. We open it and peer out. It's right against our house, we have no wings and are normal sized. The door disappeared behind us with a pop.
I looked back at the garden, expecting to see an empty lawn, but no. There were many garden gnomes, fairy statues and houses, made of concrete. I spot a couple of plastic fairies looking up at the steps. One looks exactly like Amber, another Autumn, and the final, Anastasia, disguise and all, the three looking towards us.
"What do we tell Mum? Surely she'll notice?" Kaitlin asks.
"That we bought them, or something. I really don't know." I shake my head.
We stayed outside for an hour, as to obey mum's order that she had given us an entire month ago, which I somehow remembered. So that's the story of how my sister, brother and I discovered a secret fairy dimension, and I wrote it all down. And I pinky swear that it's all true. Every last word. As long as you believe it was true, it is. And that brings us to here, and now, as I tell you these very words.
