Chapter 18
I look at myself in the mirror sighing as I brush my hair out. I look to the top of the dresser and see the glint of gold that is shining out into the aright shows where my locket hides. Its not even really hiding its just in plain sight where no one would ever think to look. I smile and quickly walk over to it. When I pick it up I let the gold chain run through my fingers and land into my palm. I open the heat locket and study the already memorized picture of my grandmother and her horse. The picture may be black and white but I know that her horse's chestnut coat was beautiful beyond compare. My grandmother's long brown hair falls over his neck and hide half of her face. But her smile shines even with her hair in her face. She looks happy. Her body seems to shine with happiness. The love in her eyes is something that you can never mistake for something else. It was clear that that horse had been her best friend. Her very best friend. What Zane had been to me. Zane. My best friend. Gone. And just like that my father thought he could be replaced. King. Even through he was a beautiful and skilled horse he would never really mean anything to me. Maybe if he hadn't been thrown into my life as quickly as he was, maybe it would have been different. I would have loved to let him into my life and maybe started a new chapter in my life. But it wasn't done the right way. It was too quick. No one really understood that.
"Jewel come on! Your going to be late!" My mother's voice travels up the stairs and rings out into my room.
I sigh and click the locket shut. I walk back over to the mirror and hook the locket around my neck. I tuck it down my shirt so that it would be hidden from my mother. I grab my black Jansport backpack, sling it over my shoulder and run down the stairs. I find my mother at the end of them leaning on the stair's rail, arms crossed and she loudly taps her foot. She looks highly annoyed. I pay no attention to her as I walk by. That's all she really wants. Just attention.
Since I didn't even glance at her, she decides to make herself known. "You know your grades aren't looking good. Your father is not going to be happy when he finds out."
I still don't look at her. "Well I was taken back out of school to take time and 'recover' from Zane's death." I kind of stumble over Zane's name but then manage to smooth it out.
"Well your going back today and your going to pull all of your grades up. Or I'll..."
"You'll what?" I swiftly turn and meet her eyes. "You'll take my phone? Ban me from going outside? Ban me from riding? Well news flash you can't do anything to me! I don't have anything that you can take from me. Sydney is gone. Fox Trot is gone. And..."
"Sydney?" She cuts me off. "Your still crying about that dirty rag? And that horse? Their gone and dead and not even you can bring them back. Their gone just like your old smelly horse. Believe it or not but I can take things from you. Its only a matter of time you just remember this conversation." She pushes past me and slams the door behind her. I just stand there wondering what she meant. What could she take from me? What is she going to do to me?
