Chapter 24The car ride to the Kingston's house is quiet and tense. My father hasn't said anything to Mother since that moment at the dinner table. The drive to the Kingston's place is about 30 minutes from where the restaurant was and we left about 20 minutes ago so that means that we have about 10 more minutes of this deathly science to go.
"Dinner was good." I take a shot at having at least a little conversation in this tense car ride. No one takes the bait. "I'm still a bit hungry though. Is it just me or do they serve really small meals there?" Nothing, still nothing they both simply stare ahead with blank faces. So I try another topic. "Are you guys going to have any tea at the Kingston's home when we get there? I haven't decided if I'll take any or not."
"Jewel"
I look at my father hopeful for a conversation. It doesn't even have to be a long one just something to fill the silence.
He sighs "Jewel, stop. Not right now."
I look down army lap and swallow hard. Not even bothering to respond. Guess everyone is just in that bad of a mood. I'll just sit here and be silent like the rest of these sad silent people.
We roll up to a stop at the Kingston's house and we all exit the car. Barbra Kingston literally skips out of the house in her very tall sleek black high heels. "Daisy!" she squeals. As if she hasn't seen her in years.
A smile explodes on my mother's face when she steps out of the car and spots Mrs. Kingston.. "Ah! Barbra!" They reach one another and welcome each other in a hug. They are both acting like they haven't seen each other in ages.
"Please, please come in. We have already had the tea made its just patiently awaiting your cups.
I silently hope that they have some kind of rolls due to the fact that I'm still hungry after my small over priced meal. At this point even just one small dinner roll would help me last just a little bit longer or at least till I get back home.
Barbra leads us up the small flight of stone stairs that she had skipped down. Our heels make a clicking sound on the stone. It reminds me of the sounds of horses hooves on the stone floor in the stables. That sound is probably one of my favorite sounds. Of course there are other sounds that I favor but that one is up there with my favorites.
We go through the familiar front doors that shows the great long hall with the white walls with a gold finish. Also the black and white checkered floor. The gold ball lamps on the wall lightens up the hall from the darkness of the night.
We pass the many oak doors that are lined up across from one another till we reach the end where the hall fanned out into the dinning room. The kitchen and also the family bedrooms. The dining room was located on the right when you reached the end of the hall. Of course on the left like as described has the second hall that leads to the family bedrooms. The kitchen was attached to the dining room.
I realize by looking at the large table that is set up in the dinning room how much oak wood they actually have in their house. The doors, the table, the chairs that match with the table, and who knows what else. People like what they like I guess and they want what they want. I make a note to myself to start paying attention to what is made of oak wood and what is not. Lottie and Vince are already seated at the table awaiting our arrival. Mr. Kingston is seated at the head of the table with his hands clasped together resting his head upon them.
"Please, please, sit." Mrs. Kingston chimes in a sing song voice.
Vince's eyes flit over to meet mine and hold my gaze. He slowly slips out of his chair and walks over to me. I'm confused at first before I actually realize what he is doing. He shows me his hand and I take it allowing him to lead me to the seat next to him. He pulls the chair out and leaves me sit down. I sit and busy myself with fixing and smoothing out my dress as Vince takes his seat to the left of me. Lottie sits across from me taking turns between both glaring down at the table and glaring up at me.
I look over to my father and mother after deciding that I can only fix and smooth out my dress so much before it would become clear that I was feeling awkward and trying to use it as a distraction. My father doesn't bother offering his arm to Mother, he's still upset with her. I got the reaction that I wanted. he was over reacting clearly and was bit harsh but I didn't regret my action. Mother's face is a mix of both sadness and anger. She looks hurt as my father sits down without even glancing at her. She wipes her emotions from her face and takes a seat next to my father who is seated next to Mr. Kingston's right side. Mrs. Kingston takes a seat next to her husband's left next to Vince.
Tea is quickly served to each of our cups. Also thankfully there are small dinner rolls set out in the middle of the table next to a plate of butter. I grab a roll and a slab of butter and place it on my small plate slapping the butter on top witch instantly starts melting the moment it touches the warm roll. I wait for it to melt.
Everyone is silently sipping on their tea until Mr. Kingston speaks up. "Ah, Frank?"
Father looks up question written on his face. His eyes ask what Mr. Kingston wants.
"I'm looking to get Lottie and new horse." He speaks slowly as if he's tiptoeing around the subject. Lottie who is in the middle of sipping at her tea swallows wrong and starts coughing wildly.
"Lottie!" Mrs. Kingston yells "Excuse yourself!" Still coughing she leaves the table. "I'm sorry she can be so rude sometimes."
Mr. Kingston clears his throat and continues "Dancing Silver seems to be to advanced for Lottie. To much horse for to little of a girl. I know you only get high quality horses. May I have the name of where you purchased King from?"
Father thinks for a few moments.
"After I get her a better suited horse I will be selling Dancing Silver to someone more advanced. I don't ever see Lottie getting up to his skill."
