Chapter 19
My hand flies to the locket that is hooked around my neck. I now have my mothers full attention as her phone is now face down in her lap. Her eyes are fixed on my hand that protects the locket from her cold eyes. The good that is running through my veins is ice cold. My heart is beating rapidly. She lifts her hand and her skin touches mine. I shutter. "What do you have?" Her voice is hard and demanding. Her hand snatches mine and forces it to open. Its as if time slowed and everything is slow motion. My fingers uncurl and my locket falls from them. The light catches the gold and shines it over to my mother. Her lips part as she studies the locket the thuds against my chest. it stops swinging and her eyes narrow as she finally see's what it is. Her eyes narrow. "Where did you get this?"Her voice does not tell me what she's feeling.
"Um..." I swallow hard. "I got it from Grandmother the day she, uh, died." I stumble over the word died. Why was there so many deaths in my life? I don't understand.
I see that when I mention Grandmother the tip of my mother's ears turn red. "Grandmother? Why did you never show me that you had it? You know what? Never mind. Hand it over."
I instantly put my guard up at her words. "No I won't give it to you. You can't take the last thing I have of Grandmother."
Her mouth twists into a crewel smile. "Fine don't give it to me." The movement the last word leaves her lips her fingers curl around the locket and rips it from my neck. I hear the pop of the chain breaking away. A cry escapes from my lips. "I tried to warn you." She brings the locket closer to her face, taking a better look at it. "Your Grandmother really did have awful tastes." She gathers the locket and the snapped chain in the palm of her hand. Thinking she would just put it into her pocket or her purse I turn and look out the window trying to think of a way I could steal it back from her. I hear the sound of a window being rolled down and just as I turn I see my mother hold her hand out and then let the locket slowly slip from her fingers.
"No!!!!!" I lunge across the space between us. I land in her lap and throw my hand out the window in attempt to save it, but its to late. It's gone. My mother shoves me off of her and straightens out her clothes. Dusting my "filth" off of her. "How could you do that? Why would you do that?"
"Because there was no point in keeping it around." She applies a new coat of lipstick and pops her lips when she finishes "You don't need it. I was doing you a favor anyways it really was an awful piece of jewelry so really what was the point in keeping it around?"
Angry tears stream down my face and she smiles when she see's me. "It was a beautiful piece of work. I was lucky to be gifted with it and you just threw it out the window."
"There was nothing pretty about it, simple as that."
"Yes is was amazing and it was also the last thing I had of Grandma."
"Ugh that woman keeps popping up again and again! You know she never liked me. Maybe it was because she knew I only married your father for the money. I began to of course love your father over time but the old bat never left it alone. When we went for dinner she would go on and on hinting to your father that he should leave me. Thank go he does't have the brains to know what she was talking about or he might have. Your father..." She laughs. "I think your father knew what I really wanted deep down inside but I think he just chose to ignore it." She says this all so casually that it scares me. Something is seriously wrong with my family. I couldn't actually believe that my mother had just used my father like that. It was sick. Maybe my father really had been a nice guy once in a life time ago but I think that, that was gone. I think that he had really wanted to find love and when he thought he wound it heater just found out that she wanted his money.
That must have broken his heart. It would have broken mine for sure. Shattered it completely if it wasn't already shattered. I wished that I could have met my father before my mother. Maybe he would have been pretty cool. My mother must have ruined it all. So all he had left to do was tend to the money to keep her here. Next to his side as she sucks all the money off him. Seeing and knowing that he stays with her shows the truth. He really does love her. More than the money. Something about her must fascinate him. But what?

I finish tacking up King and lead him to the gate and a few steps away I mount up. King dances under me. I gather the reins and get him under control. He was being a little jumpy today. No matter I could work around it. I kick him forward and listen to the sound of his hooves crunching on the gravel. Slowly the stables start to fade away. Its just me and King out here. I struggle to hold him in his in his place because of how jumpy he's being today. I didn't understand what was going on with him today. I kick him into a trot to move us along to where we were going. I had to make this small trip s quick as possible. My mother would be here in about an hour to pick me up and take me home for dinner.
I kick King into a canter as we finally reach the end of the long row of trees that leads away from the stables. I can hear the cars that drive by on the road just behind the trees. Thinking that King was really jumpy when we left the stables was nothing compared to how jumpy he was now. The sound of the cars driving by was scaring him. It seemed like he couldn't control himself. Like he couldn't quit hopping around with every step he took. I hold his reins tight in order to keep him in line. He starts to snort and rear his head up. Yeah something has definitely gotten on his nerves.
"Easy boy. Calm down." I try to sooth him. I still hold the reins tight to keep him from bolting on me in my right hand and pat his neck with my left hand. I stop him and continue to talk to him for a few more minutes trying to get him to calm down for me. It seems to work, he stops prancing around under me. I loosen the reins for him and feel his mouth relax. He starts to play with the bit in his mouth. I push him into a steady walk. Just a few minutes later I then push him into a trot. Only minutes later we reach the road. No cars are around at the moment so I quickly have King cross the road. We quickly continue down the side of the road and I still keep careful eye watching out for cars. King has seemed to calm down but I can tell that he's still tense. I'm going to have to guess that something is going on at the stables that I don't know about, I'm going to have to look into it when I get back.
I slow King down and look down at his feet. My eye scan over the road trying to find at least a hint of gold. While trying to look for my locket I fail to notice a car that is coming out way. It passes us sending a gush of wind our way. King gets spooked at the wind and the noise that the car makes. He rears into the air and jumps forward. I grip the reins and try to hold on for a bumpy ride.
