As the 40 mile long convoy of Russian armored vehicles and tanks moved its way closer to the center of Kyiv, everyone moved their way downstairs to the bunker, for most of the day. There are times when the intelligence says it is safe for them to me move back upstairs, but for the most part, everyone has stayed downstairs here. Volodymyr, though, stays in this office as much as he can. It scares me. It does. But I know they are giving him the most up-to-date information.
Our time up here is nice. Tomorrow is a big day for him though, so I'll try to pull him out of the office a little earlier than normal. He's speaking to the United States Congress. This isn't his first parliamentary address, but speaking to the US is key to getting more aid. He speaks to Joe Biden almost daily asking for anything and everything, but he must go through Congress to get approval. He's even spoken to a few from the House of Representatives earlier, but now it's the full legislative body.
From the recent numbers on social media engagement, there's been a huge uptick in traction from the US. The support for more aid from the US is thereby given by their people, it's more just them doing it at this point. Of course, there is more that they can do, and we expect them to do it. They have things we need to win this war, we have to prove that we can learn quickly and successfully use the aid they are providing us.
I enter his office for dinner, as he's still on a phone call. It seems to be Emmanuel Macron from how he's speaking. As the French election draws closer, Macron has not been the easiest to get a commitment from France for any type of aid. This is even more frustrating since he stood up and supported Volodymyr during a meeting with Putin and Merkel in 2019.
I sat down across from him and started to eat my dinner of braised pork with mashed potatoes. It's warm and filling. Also comforting in ways. As I begin to eat I quietly, I listen for what I can get out of the conversation.
"We need our skies closed to keep them from controlling more land, and so we can start an offensive attack. With the state of our Air Force and the arms we do have, air support would be key if we are fighting a ground war." He explains that he has spoken to him about this before. "Cities have been destroyed. In this war, they never attacked, combat wise. They have gone after our innocent citizens. One Hundred children have died, that have been accounted for so far. Who knows how many others could die or who have not been found yet?"
He listens to the response carefully, making quick notes of it on his pad of paper.
"We need to stop them from killing innocent women and children. No one asked for them to be here, but they are. We need to stop them before it becomes mass genocide." He explained in response. "I invited you to come to see for yourself, my friend."
Volodymyr was trying to keep his cool, but I could tell that it was getting difficult for him. He must be repeating himself day after day to different leaders that he's talking to on a daily basis. The message is clear about what we need. While we understand that closing our skies will be a long shot, there are other weapons and vehicles that we are asking for as far as aid goes. Other weapons are the tools that we need to protect the nation.
It took me a second to realize that he invited Macron here to see this for himself. To see what this war on our people has done to our beautiful country. There was always a Ukraine we all knew and loved. We still love our country, but now we are being attacked because we wanted to be a part of the democratic world. Macron will most likely end up running against an opponent that has their pockets lined by Putin. It's important to try for support now, rather than later. Or maybe he will never be as good of a friend as we thought he was.
"Yes, the offer is valid even after you win, my friend." He replied, to something probably pushing the offer back. "Ah, yes. We will speak again soon," He said before hanging up the phone.
