Why me

People always ask me why
Why do I continue to hurt myself
I know it's wrong
Never allowing myself to feel anything
Never taking chances
When you call me selfish
You'll never understand how much that hurts
Don't you know that the only reason I'm still here
Is that I don't want to cause you pain
I know how it feels to be totally helpless
Surrounded by things you wish you could change
But knowing fate will always win
And I wouldn't wish that feeling on anyone
I'll always put your feelings before mine
Because deep down I know what I want doesn't matter
You've told me so a million times
Do you know how much it hurts me
When you leave me all alone
Trapped in my thoughts with no way out
You say I should be thankful,
That you're teaching me to be independent
To take care of myself
If only you knew how close you were to losing me forever every time you left
If you could read my mind,
How would you react?
If you could take back the things you said
Would you?
Except you can't change the past
So now it's time to let me go
Don't try to make amends
It's not like you'll ever hear these words anyways
I'm not just surviving anymore, I'm living
But I'm not doing it for you anymore
It's for me
I'm still here not because I forgive you, but because I'm letting go of everything you did.
I'm tired of trying my hardest to make you see things my way
I'm going to follow my dreams
For no one but myself
When I'm finally flying
I hope you take all the credit
Because you gave me the motivation
If I've learned one thing from you,
It's that I rely on other people for support
Because they'll always let you down in the end
You have to make the choice to live on your own
The knight in shining armor never came
So the princess kicked off her her shoes
Hiked up her skirt
And rescued herself
Because she knew deep down
That no one was coming to save her
in the end.
