Life Preserver

Pain is apart of our lives,

No matter how hard we try to avoid it.

Some of us embrace it,

While others are swallowed up.

While some of us float,

Others drown.

Some experience more than they can bear.

At times it seems overwhelming

Caught upstream without a raft.

Deciding whether to reach for shore,

Or sink beneath the waves.

Then there are people like me,

The Life Preservers.

Those of us who know what it's like

To float and to sink.

Who try so hard to stay afloat,

When they know it would be easier to sink.

Who try to be happy,

And in return,

Become completely numb to the world.

Our only sense of purpose,

To make the choice for you.

When you want to sink,

We keep you afloat.

We bear the weight of the world for you,

We make you smile through your tears.

It's all we can do.

It's too late for us.

But not too late for you.
