It doesn't take someone smart to figure out that something has gone seriously wrong. I ran back into my house, slightly dazed by what I had just seen. I rushed to the living room and looked for the tv, seeing it shattered and on the floor, I moved to my second option, my old radio. I switched it on and fumbled around with it a little, finding little but static and interference where the countless morning talk shows used to be. Finally I heard the radio pick up a station that seemed to be working. From what I could hear, it was an eardrum shattering buzzer going off about every ten seconds, followed by someone talking in a hurried and frantic voice.

I couldn't make out most of the words as there was an annoying amount of interference. I did however catch a few words, "massive", "attack", "American", "soil". Now I'm no wheel of fortune winner but if you gave me a vowel or two, I could probably guess that it said massive attack on American soil. I also noticed one distinct word, "WAR". while this was pretty shocking and jarring, it wasn't entirely surprising. There had been growing tensions between the U.S., North Korea, and well, most of the Middle East since 2017. I sat back in my old dining room chair, taking in all this information and trying to process it. I can only assume, from the looks of the world around me, that the perpetrator was
a nuclear missile.

I had only seen them in old World War Two documentaries that I watched in seventh grade social studies. From the destruction I've seen these things do on tv, I can only imagine that I'm pretty far away from the blast zone, seeing as I'm not evaporated. I'm not sure who it was who declared war on us, but at this point, it doesn't matter to me anyway. All I know is that Sacramento is screwed, and I should get as far away from here as possible. I blindly grabbed the life essentials and stumbled out the door. I tried the car but the battery was fried, "guess I'm walking" I said. I was fortunate enough to live on the outskirts of Sacramento and not the main bullseye for the attack. From what I could tell from the vista before me, I had a long walk before I hit anything not affected by the blast.

I started walking the chalky path away from the blast zone, not thinking of anything but leaving that place. I got about a mile down the road before I saw something living. A man, an old man. I ran up to him, "hey you!" I called, "can you help me!". The man looked dazed and confused, he stumbled around and lurched with an unnatural look. "Are you okay" I yelled at him. "Please help me he yelled, I can't see". As I got closer, I could see that he was as blind as a bat, from the flash of the blast, I guessed. "Here" I yelled, "I'll help you, "I'm trying to get to someplace safe from the radiation". "what radiation" he inquired? "Of course" I thought, he was probably blinded the second the blast occurred, he wouldn't have known what had happened to him. "There was a blast, and we need to get out of here" I said. He seemed reluctant, but seeing that he had instantly been blinded, I guess he couldn't argue with the facts. "Come on" I said, "we have a long walk ahead of us".
