What happened to the bridge?

I burst out of the back door and immediately started heaving, I felt sick from the fact that the man I saw minutes ago was dead, and from the hit I had taken to the face which I was sure, gave me a concussion. I threw up what food and water I had left in my system which only made me feel worse. I was bleeding heavily from my nose, lip, and shoulder. I was shivering and freaked out by the whole ordeal but I tried to stay calm.

I couldn't bring myself to go back inside, even though the guy surely had supplies for the taking. It sounds stupid, but after that whole situation, I decided that I need a weapon. As I had already found out, there are going to be some really neurotic and messed up people walking these streets. I decided to head to the sporting goods store which I knew had baseball bats and other assorted tools.

I decided on the sporting goods store because they usually have camping gear and outdoor essentials, these would defiantly help me out until help arrives. The store seems farther into the blast zone but it was worth the risk if I could defend myself. " "What am I doing" I thought, I don't intend to kill anyone else, but if this kind of thing keeps happening it might become a daily routine. "What am I thinking" this place is already starting to get to me. A sudden roar broke my train of thought. I looked up to see a squadron of fighter jets pass overhead. "Are they scouting the area?" I thought. I don't see much more of a reason to pass by here.

I looked up at the sky, I had never really gotten a good look at everything until now. There were thick clouds over the entire sky and the sky itself was tinted a slight reddish orange. The ground seemed to be dryer and dustier than usually. Most plants had died and the grass was a light shade of brown. Several houses in the distance had been blown over, and even the closer ones had no windows and significant damage to their exteriors. The air seemed more smoggy and harder to breathe in. I looked to the edge of my vision where I saw all the formerly tall buildings and sky scrapers were decimated.

i reluctantly started heading toward the sporting goods store, judging how long it would take me to walk there just by looking. I trudged along the worn road and into town. ( fifteen minutes later) I arrived at the sporting goods store and walked inside. Once inside, i searched for the outdoor survival section. I went in and found matches, water bottles, first aid kits and lots of other handy survival tools. In the end I chose two tools to defend myself, a lightweight aluminum bat and a folding military shovel with a blade edge on one side and a saw on the other side. I imagined that these would end up being my best friends. I had a horrible headache, hell I could use some excedrin.

I looked across the street to where a best buy and a cvs were. Most of the best buy was gone but it looked like the cvs was salvageable. I started making my way to the cvs and got about half way when something happens. I wasn't paying attention to the ground and I was looking around at the destruction, when I tripped. I hit the deck hard and smashed my kneecap on the cement. I cried out in pain and yelled at myself for being so stupid. Then I happened to look back. I suddenly realized what had tripped me, lying on the ground a few feet back was the grilled corpse of some unlucky soul. I stared in shock at the body, the skin was shriveled, the eyes were gone, and their clothes were plastered to them, almost like an awfully unlucky manakin.

I stumbled backward forgetting about my knee and started to run toward the cvs. As I ran through the door I ran straight into a man carrying lots of meds. The impact sent all of his finds scattering in all directions. I breathed a sigh of relief, the first live person I had seen since, well, you know. He stood up and yelled "what are you doing here, most everyone has been evacuated." "Well you're still here" I said, rubbing my head. "There was no way out with the big old fence and I wouldn't be leaving this city because all of the exits had been shutdown." "All of the high ways and bridges?"I said he nodded, "there was a huge rush to any exit, people who weren't even near the blast zone where overflowing the golden gate and all major highways. But..." " But what?" "But the marines and national guard had already posted up, and good luck getting through them."

" word over my radio is that it was bombed as well, about a day ago, a lot of lives lost there" he said shaking his head. Just then we heard a rumbling overhead, and a large plane flew over and dropped some kind of box with two parachutes coming off of it. The box was white with a Red Cross on it, that could only mean one thing, D.S.R (Disaster on Site Relief). Without saying a word we both started sprinting toward the area it was falling. We got there about two minutes after it landed, but so did someone else. As we approached the box two more people emerged from nowhere.

One was a woman who looked in her twenties and the other was a man probably in his thirties. "Back off" he said "we need these for ourselves". I looked over at the man standing next to me and we both understood each other. We weren't about to let them have all those supplies. "Just let us have the supplies and we'll be on our way" I said. Another man materialized behind them, at this part I started to get worried. The guy next to me didn't look the least bit fazed. All of a sudden he charged the crate and grabbed it.

One of the two men ran up a hit him with a punch that looked like it had the impact to stop a train. He stumbled backwards and fell over. He got up, but extremely enraged this time, he picked up a rock, held it in his hand, and punched the man in the face sending him to his knees, the fight was on. I charged into the fray and pulled out my compact shovel. I didn't want to kill anyone like last time but I couldn't help it if they tried to kill me. The second man pulled a knife and swatted at me several times, nearly hitting me. I swung with the flat side of the shovel, and hit his knee, momentarily stunning him.

I swung hard and dug the sharp edge of the lightweight shovel into his skull. I let go, leaving all foot and a half of shovel in his head. He stumbled backwards and then fell forwards, he landed on the shovel, drilling it deeper in. I looked over at the man who had thrown the punch with the rock. He was on top of the other man brutally beating his skull in with clobbering blows. Suddenly I felt a searing pain in my back, I cringed and reached back as I turned around. The woman had stuck a pocket knife deep in my back, near my collarbone. She kicked me in the gut and presumed to run over to the box, grab a handful of supplies, and then dash off into the distance.

I saw the man I had come with get off of the other guy and start to walk toward the disaster relief box. He started sifting through the supplies. There was everything from food, to medicine, to gauze, and alcohol pads. I looked into the distance, where the girl had ran off to but couldn't make anything out. I turned around and took a bottle of ibuprofen from the crate, this'll do for my headache I thought. I remember my shovel and went over to the man's corpse. The realization that I had already killed two people hit me, and it wasn't a good feeling. I was attacked with a knife though, so it was somewhat justified, even if it felt terrible.

I rolled the man over and grabbed my shovel, I pulled with all of my might, and freed the shovel from the man's head. The shovel came out with a gross cracking and ripping noise. I turned away to see my partner in crime still sifting through meds and other objects of interest. I looked around for anyone else that might have been lurking in the shadows, I finally let my guard Down and went back to the survival kit. I walked up to the man and started sorting through important things and non important things. I saw him reach for something, and I said "we sure got them as I stared back into the distance". "We sure did" he said. That was the last thing I heard before he hit me in the head with a lead pipe and everything went dark....
