The Present...
I was immersed in going through a large stack of requests from my pack, mainly travel requests for young wolves to go find their mates. My pack has not had a Luna in over sixty years, as my father's mate died soon after my birth and my mate is not a werewolf yet, causing fewer and fewer female wolves to be born. We are not sure why but I assume it is because the Moon Goddess knows that young female wolves are not safe when male wolves are restless without a Luna. As it is, I have already had to banish not only members from my pack but other packs as well for raping female wolves.
I sigh and rub my eyes as they are starting to grow tired from the hours of reading I have been doing. I look out the window at the endless sprawl of trees in front of me. I could see my warriors training tirelessly in hand-to-hand combat. Ever since I found my mate, I have pushed my wolves harder and harder during training. I need to make sure that they are strong enough to protect her and themselves. I am not sure how the other packs are going to react to my mate and I need to be ready for any challenges to my pack's power.
My wolf whined at the thought of his mate. We have not been able to go back to Tucson to see her in over a year. He has become secluded and quiet from the loneliness. Usually, wolves don't have to go eight years without their mates and my wolf is reaching his breaking point. I sigh and get up and walk upstairs into the room above my office. It's a huge bedroom with bright white walls that reflect the light from the big french doors leading to the balcony and the huge windows all around the room. The natural lighting makes the room look even bigger. In one of the windows, there is a huge bench. In the middle of the room, there is a queen-sized bed covered with a beige comforter and maroon and gold pillows. Across from the bed, there is a TV, a huge bean bag chair, and a vanity with all sorts of makeup, matched perfectly to my mate. This is to be her room when I finally bring her here. I figured she would want her own space, not feeling comfortable in our room until she adjusts to this way of life. After years of watching her, I have got to know her likes and dislikes from afar and I have spent countless hours renovating the Alpha quarters just for her.
I sit down on the bench in the window and stare off into the horizon. I knew she would like this room just for the view. Being on the fourth floor, you can see the ocean inlet with the sharp brooding mountains in the background. In the early mornings, you can see the sea fog gather around the base of the mountains. You also have a great view of the expansive forest on my pack lands. I knew she loved trees, which I always have to laugh at because in Arizona everything looks like it has been burnt from the scorching sun. I can't wait for her to see this view.
As I am fantasizing about my mate being in her room here with me where she belongs I feel a sudden burst of sadness bubble up in me and quickly dissipate. Ever since meeting my mate, I am able to feel a very small amount of her emotions, something you are not usually able to do until completing the mate bond. However, I am glad I can feel what she feels, it makes me feel close to her even though we are miles apart and I hope she feels a small sense of comfort from me even though she is human. No one in my pack lands but my Beta, Marcus, and his mate know about this room and my mate. I could not risk people finding out about my mate when she is not here where I can protect her and know she is safe.
I stand up and go over to the small library I made for her. The wall next to the bench in the window has been hollowed out to form shelves and has been painted a matte black to contrast against the white walls. Books of various genres, but mostly fantasy, her favorite, line the shelves. I bend down and pick up the mossy green box at the bottom of the bookshelf and place it on the small desk I put in here for her to draw on, a hobby she hasn't done since graduating college but something I wish she would do again. I hope she can take refuge in this room, something she has never had before.
