We're Ecoterrorists

Today, another prank takes place. Every computer in the entire school has been hijacked and can now only play that old meme of the poptart cat flying through space. It's a bit nostalgic, to be honest. I remember thinking this video was absolutely hilarious when I was younger. Then again, so did everyone else. Students are clenching their hands over their ears to drown out the continuous, "nyan nyan nyan nyan nyan nyan nyan nyan nyan nyan nyan nyan nyan nyan" that plays at full volume in classrooms. Most teachers have unplugged their computers so it would stop.

I'm walking through the hallway when I see Faye moving in the opposite direction. We meet eyes for a second before she looks away and quickens her pace. And, without warning, I reach out and grab her sweater sleeve, tugging her into a stairwell.

"The fuck-" she says as she readjusts her sweater. "What is it?"

I huff out a breath and cross my arms. "I just... wanted to apologize. For what I said. And how I reacted to what you said. I... I don't know. I guess I'm not great at sorting through my emotions or whatever. But, I want you to know I had a good time hanging out and I... would like to be friends with you. If you'd let me." And, to my astonishment, Faye smiles. And then laughs. "What's so funny?"

But, she's still laughing and I'm still crossing my arms, trying very hard not to get annoyed. "You," she says after a beat. "You are hilarious, Sunny Davidson. Of course, I want to be friends with you. That's all I wanted from the start."

"I... I just-"

"Look, I'm sorry too," Faye interrupts, waving her hands. "I got upset. But, I don't think we need to apologize or anything. We barely even argued."

"Well, we basically did. And you've been avoiding me."

"Yeah, sorry. I just felt a bit embarrassed."

"Why?"

"Because I snapped at you. And because I thought we were friends and you didn't. I don't know."

I nod. "Fair enough. We are friends, though. We already were." There's a pause before I say, "You don't really think I'm a psychopath, do you?"

Faye shrugs a bit. "Not sure yet. I've still got to get to know you. But so far, you don't seem psychotic, so I think that's a good sign." I chuckle at this and she gives me a wide smile.

"So, we're okay?"

"We are." Faye steps aside to let a boy cross before returning to me. "So, I saw Maeve and Noah all... cuddly."

"Yeah. They're dating officially now."

"Ah, okay then," she replies with a nod. "How do we feel about this?"

"Maeve seems happy," I shrug. "So, I'm alright with it."

"Good," she says. "Do you plan on going to the 'Rising Unification of Ecoterrorists' meetup?" Faye puts on this posh voice and I chuckle in reply.

"Probably not."

"Well, you should. I don't want to go alone."

"You're going?"

"Obviously. Any excuse to get out for an evening. Plus, I can investigate."

"Ah, you're a practical Nancy Drew," I say and the bell rings above us. Faye slings her bag over a shoulder and gives me a wink.

"I prefer Sherlock Holmes," she says before exiting the stairwell.

As I look up from my laptop, I realize the classroom is almost entirely empty. Maeve and I are the only two occupants now and she is across from me, scrolling on her phone. I begin to pack up before she grins at me.
