Me: "Welcome to chapter 20!"

Flip: "Wow. Can I go home now?"

Me: "No! Because I'm going to talk about chapter 20!"

Flip: "If this is a joke, it's not funny."

Me: "There's no joke; this is really chapter 20!"

Flip: "Alright, I'm leaving."

JADE POV

Darkness was all I saw for about 30 minutes. I knew I fainted, but I didn't want to think about how long it had been in the real world.

And then I heard a familiar voice.

"Hello," said the voice in my head.

You! You said you would talk to me again in one day!

"Yes, yes... I am sorry about that. The first time, it was simply having met Lucy that had triggered it. This time, I had to force the connection."

You made me faint?

"Yes. I am sorry. But I need to talk to you."

Well, I don't want to talk to you.

"I think you may want to. I have news for you, Jade. Important news."

What could possibly be more important in my life than what's happening right now in the real world?

"I am... I am someone you know. You don't know that you know me, but you do. You remember me, somehow, even having never met me."

Well, you're not wrong. But this doesn't feel... right, either.

"Yes. My name is James. I am currently a spirit. I am only able to talk to you because you have had direct contact with an object that held my spirit."

The... amulet?

"Yes. I am... was Lucy's brother."

Is that why... when you were thrown away...

"I did not travel back to Lucy. Jade, you own the amulet now. This amulet is precious to many Pokémon - not just my father. You have something now, Jade. Something that many Pokémon want. I can only trust that you will do what is right. I do not know if this is the right decision, but fate has brought us together, so we can only hope it was the right decision."

...Okay. Oh, also. I kept getting really bad headaches after we first talked. Is... that related?

"I needed some way to know we were still in contact. I gave you headaches occasionally to make sure you could still interact with me."

Alright then...

"I will tell you now the same thing I had told you before."

What?

"It will all be over soon."

"It will all

be over

s o o n..."

And then I woke up.

LIN POV

Two weeks. Two weeks of Jade being in a coma. He hasn't woken up and I'm scared that he's dead. It would definitely be weird - I mean, he'd basically just die for no reason - but it's still... possible. I haven't given up hope yet.

And Lucy is gone too. By "gone", I don't mean she moved. I mean her house is literally nowhere to be found. Her house was just... gone one day. I hope she's safe somewhere, no matter how mad I may be at her.

Wes... Wes hasn't gotten any better. He's back to his old self. He's been going around trying desperately to get someone besides me to care about him. He probably thinks I don't even care about him anymore, because I can't really bring myself to talk to anyone.

Jacob isn't talking to anyone either. I'm certain me and Lucy were his only friends, and with Lucy gone and me... being distant, he's stuck with no one to talk to.

The Popplio who always followed Lucy around - Penny, I think - started following Wes around. From what I can gather, she's trying to get Wes to stop being his old self and go back to how he was in the cave. She's not even at school half the time.

And then... there's me. I have nowhere to go. Nothing to do. When the school burned down, it was scary. In the cave, we thought that things couldn't be any worse. And now, against all odds, they are. The school opened back up, but we have to miss three weeks of summer break to make up the time it spent being burned down. I'm currently sitting in the Pokémon Center, waiting for the nurse to tell me how Jade is doing... or if he's even still alive.

From the back corridor, I hear "Can you speak or walk? Are you experiencing any side effects?"

I know it's probably not Jade. But I can't help but hope.

I keep listening. "You can't... you're certain you're okay? ...yes, you do seem to be fine, not retaining any side effects... alright, this isn't normal procedure, but I can let you go if you really think you're fine... alright... you're free to go."

I hear footsteps coming from the corridor. I know it can't be Jade. It couldn't be.

Could it?

I look up at the corridor. I can't believe my eyes.

Jade is standing there, staring back at me.

And I can't decide what I should be feeling.

All I know is one thing.

In this moment, I couldn't be happier.
