Flip: "So what are we doing in today's author's note?"

Me: "That's the fun part: we aren't."

Flip: "Why?"

Me: "I couldn't think of enough to write in this chapter, so I'm filling in some of the empty space with this author's note."

Flip: "This is a bad solution for writer's block."

Me: "It's not writer's block - I know exactly what's going to happen. But this chapter is just... an intermission of sorts, so I don't have much to write about."

Flip: "...It's writer's block."

Me: "IT IS NOT-"

LUCY POV

In the end, I could not face my fears.

I had heard of the fires; they were the subject of much news across the region. The town was slowly burning away in my father's quest to find the amulet.

I knew that Jade had it, and I knew that he would not be able to get rid of it, no matter what he tried. Jade had been accepted by my brother as his new guardian, and I could not interfere.

I saw a chance. I ran away, knowing that my father would not try to find me.

But now...

Seeing those that I considered friends in danger, trying to remain calm in a time of great distress...

It leads me to return.

I have to return.

LIN POV

It was four in the morning, and I had gathered all of my close friends for a meeting of sorts.

Wes got there first, followed by Jade. Then came Jacob, and then... nothing. Penny wasn't there. I would have at least expected her to be with Wes, but... no, she wasn't there.

"So, does anyone know where Penny is?" I asked.

Pause.

"Uh," Wes hesitantly answered, "she might be at, uh... she was walking with me and, uh... she thought she saw Lucy and ran off... in the direction of the fire station wreckage..."

I stared blankly at Wes. There was a pretty long awkward pause to just take all of what he just said in.

Finally, Jade spoke up. "Why didn't you follow her? Lucy knows more about this than anyone, she'd actually help-"

"Yeah, but she's also the target!" Wes interrupted.

"Actually, I'm the target, and it's only because of this stupid amulet that I can't get rid of."

"Wait, what?" Wes questioned. He was obviously pretty confused about the whole 'amulet' thing, given that he didn't care enough to listen when Lucy explained it.

"Look," said Jacob, "We all messed up and blah, blah, blah, but can we actually go get Lucy? I mean, she would know what to do, right?"

Wes and Jade's argument - if you could even call it that - cooled down quickly after that.

Jacob continued. "I say we go over to the fire station wreckage, and-"

"Believe me, you will find no good there."

A voice came from the entrance. We all knew the voice.

It was Lucy.

"If we want to approach this correctly," Lucy began, "we first need to separate the amulet from Jade. Unfortunately... that seems impossible at the moment. But I am certain that there are Pokémon in this town that are powerful enough to do so."

She began to walk out of the house.

"I will be at the school when you need me."
