"Peter!" I whisper. "Get back here!"
He doesn't even spare a glance as he continues to walk away from me and our distracted Aunt and Uncle. After quickly looking between them and my brother, I sigh. "Hold on..." And sneak over to where Peter is standing.
"Took you long enough." He jokingly sneers.
"Oh, be quiet." I retort. "What are you trying to do anyway?"
"I don't just want to stand around looking at fancy computers."
"But you like fancy computers..." I say, skeptically.
"Well yeah but I want to actually DO something." He whines.
"Fine" I roll my eyes. "Where to?"
Peter looks around for a moment before settling his gaze on an exhibit labeled, "INCREDIBLE INSECTS." He points. "There"
"Really? Insects? Since when have you been interested in bugs?"
"Since like two seconds ago," Pete says mockingly.
I shrug. "Alright. Let's go then."
We walk over in tandem to the insect display. There aren't many people looking, so we waltz right up to the spiders. On the table in front of us, there are three spider cages. However, one, in particular, catches my eye.
Radioactive Spiders
Specimens tested on by scientists to discover the effects of radiation on animal life forms.
DO NOT TOUCH
Peter and I make eye contact. "Radioactive?" We say in sync and lean in to get a closer look.
"OW-" I yell before catching myself.
"O-" Peter starts to yell but his reaction comes half a second after mine so I slap my hand over his mouth.
We both shake the spiders that jumped onto our hands back into the cages through the windows on the top. We get some weird looks from strangers but no one saw the spiders on us. Peter and I turn to each other.
"Did we-" Peter whispers.
"Just get bitten-" I continue.
"BY RADIOACTIVE SPIDERS?!" We whisper-yell.
"Okay. Don't panic. Maybe nothing will happen." I say while shrugging and absolutely starting to panic.
"Don't panic!? How are we not supposed to panic? Do you realize how things like this end?"
"Of course I do, Peter!" I cry. "Typically, when exposed to radiation, people either get really sick or die."
"You don't think..." Peter starts.
"No no no," I reassure. "We're just kids that wouldn't happen to us."
But neither of us is sure.
