Gaara's POV
To be completely honest, I have thought about what it would be like to wake up next to Y/n. But I absolutely would not have thought that it would happen so soon. Last night feels like a dream.
I look over at her sleeping form, her peaceful face. To think that I would be worthy of being close to something so beautiful. I'm not worthy.
I don't want to leave. I want to stay in this moment for as long as possible. But I've lingered for too long already.
I climb out of bed slowly, trying not to wake Y/n. I'm halfway through buttoning my shirt when she stirs.
"Where are you going?" she asks groggily.
"A meeting," I reply. "I have to deal with the fallout of what happened yesterday."
"I wish you didn't have to leave," Y/n says, burrowing deeper under the blankets.
"Me too," I murmur. "I'll see you later."
Y/n grunts in reply, already dozing back off.
I leave the room, closing the door gently behind me.
Last night never should have happened. We didn't go all the way or anything, but still. She was distraught and heartbroken. She probably didn't mean anything, just wanted to forget for a moment, like she said.
That thought hurts. But if I didn't want to get hurt, I never should have kissed her back.
I meant it, all of it.
"You look like you had a rough night," Temari asks when I walk into her room, which we've designated as our meeting space.
"Every night is a rough night for me," I reply, sitting down across from her at the table. "I've always been a pretty bad insomniac."
"I don't think I ever heard you come back to your room," Kankuro says. "Did you stay somewhere else?"
I blush at the memory of where I was. Of the softness of Y/n's mouth on mine. "Doesn't matter. Have we heard from the other Kages yet?"
"There's going to be another meeting about moving forward with the united shinobi force," Temari answers.
"So we're going to war?"
Both of my siblings nod solemnly.
"There's one other thing," Kankuro says. "Apparently, Naruto tried to come to the summit. he wanted to defend Sasuke or something. He's staying at an inn nearby."
I sigh. "I should probably go talk to him. I bet that Y/n will want to come to."
"Did I hear my name?"
I turn around to see Y/n peeking around the door, her tangled hair pulled back into a messy braid.
"Yes," Temari says. "Naruto's in town, and we're going to visit him."
Y/n's brow furrows. "Why is Naruto here?"
"He heard about the summit," I tell her.
Her expression turns grave. "I'll get dressed."

Y/n's POV
Right when we're about to leave the inn to go see Naruto, Gaara pulls me aside. His expression is serious, which honestly, makes me nervous.
"What is it?" I ask him.
"Last night shouldn't have happened," Gaara says.
I blink at him. "What?"
