YAWNNNNN! This loud noise told the gadgets that it was time to rise and shine. Dex Dizznee woke with drool dribbling down (A/N: I love me some alliteration) his chin and his blankets sprawled across the floor. How do they always end up there? he thought to himself. (A/N: Anyone else's covers always on the floor? No? Just me?) He hopped out of bed and scanned his room for a gadget to work on. He spotted his shiny Connectorbot, sat down, and was about to work his magic on it when—

BANG!!!

"AHHHHHHH!!! WHAT WAS THAT?!" Dex screamed.

"Just me!" announced Keefe. (A/N: Yes, you may fangirl/fanboy over Lord Hunkyhair™️ in the comments. 😆 I'll wait! *waits 😶* Alright, moving on with the story....)

"Oh, okay," replied Dex. "That makes sen— wait, how'd you get into my house?! It's 9 AM on a Saturday, Keefe! And I didn't even let you in!!"

"I'm sneaky," Keefe insisted.

"No, really."

"Ughhh. You're so pushy." He paused. "It was Lex or Rex—couldn't tell which—who let me in. But don't worry: I'm not here for a prank."

Dex rolled his eyes, clearly unconvinced. "Uh-huh," he uttered in a disbelieving tone. "I seriously doubt that."

"No really!" Keefe pressed. "Something super weird is happening! This morning, I woke up and I... I-I made something!"

Dex rolled his eyes again. (He was getting pretty good at it.) "Woah, no way—you've finally managed to do something without 'Foster' to help you."

"What—no! Look, I made a... a GADGET!!!"

"Wait, what?"

"LOOKIE!"

Keefe pulled some sort of silver contraption out from behind his back. He gently held it out for Dex to examine.

"Clearly, this is a device that will style your hair for you," Dex noted. "I see why you made it: you need to keep The Hair™️ perfect, don't you?"

Keefe nodded. "But how did I make it?" he inquired.

"That's what I'm still trying to figure out," Dex admitted. He thought about it for a second before whispering, "I think you might have manifested another ability." (A/N: Clearly from the title you know what's going on 😉)

"YAYAYAY— wait. Isn't it a little late for me to get another ability?"

"I guess not."

Keefe hopped up and down, up and down. Cheerfully, he sprinted a lap around Dex's room, but Dex plopped down onto his bed.

"Jeez, you're excited," Dex observed, fanning his face. "I can feel it from here. It's overwhelming." A droplet of sweat trickled down his face and fell onto his leg, emphasizing his point.

"Um... only Empaths can do that," Keefe said. (A/N: I can hear my theater director saying "dOn'T sAy 'uM'" right now lol)

"No, I think I can tell how elated you are because you're running around my room." Dex signed. "This is weird." He stood up and walked around in a circle in thought. "How come you're suddenly the 'techy' one and I feel your emotions? Ugh, I need to distract myself. I'm gonna work on my Connectorbot." He made his way over to his workstation. He picked up the Connectorbot and tried to work on it, but failed in his attempts.

"NOOO! I really wanted to fix that. UGH. I just can't hear it talking to me anymore!" (A/N: Imagine being even more oblivious than Sophie.... Dex might break her record.)

"Dex... I can hear it talking to me," Keefe mumbled.

"What was that?"

"I can hear it talking to me!"

"What's it saying??"

"Um... it's saying, 'Help me, Keefe. Fix me! You're the only Technopath who can do it!!' I don't know why—"

"I think something's wrong with us," Dex concluded.

"Yeah, no kidding!" agreed Keefe. "I am a Technopath and you are an Empath! DO YOU GET WHAT I'M SAYING??"

"Um... no?"

"UGH!" shouted Keefe. "YOU'RE MORE OBLIVIOUS THAN FOSTER! Actually, I take that back; that would be impossible."

"Yeah... but what the heck am I being oblivious about?"

"Just the fact that we SWITCHED ABILITIES!!!"

Just then, the boys heard pounding noises. The racket quickly traveled closer to the door, until the door burst open and out came—

"Mom!" Dex shouted at the same time that Keefe exclaimed, "Juline!"

"What's all that yelling?" Juline questioned.

"We switched—" Keefe tried to say "abilties" but Dex blurted out, "—Mallowmelt recipes!"

Keefe shot him a questioning look.

"Yeah...." Dex muttered, thinking of a way to keep his excuse going. "We are trying each other's Mallowmelts." (A/N: Is "Mallowmelt" capitalized? I don't think so, but I'll keep it like that because elvin treats deserve recognition in our world. Haha! 😆)

"Then where are your creations?" Juline questioned suspiciously.

"Um... that's why Keefe was shouting! He was mad that he forgot his Mallowmelt at home and, um, got, like, angry. So... yeah!"

"Dex, you forgot to make your Mallowmelt!" Keefe said, playing along. "That's much worse!" Dex forgot that Keefe was an Empath and knew how to lie properly. (A/N: LIE PROPERLY HAHAHAHA IDK WHY BUT THAT'S SO FUNNY!!!) Well, maybe Keefe wasn't an Empath anymore. Or he still is but just manifested another ability? Ugh, Dex decided he'd figure it out later.

"Right, I didn't make any," said Dex. "I thought you were coming tomorrow."

"Well that's okay. I'll go home and get mine and you can start working on yours. Or we could just cancel this whole thing and agree mine is better." Keefe's famous Smirk™️ spread across his face. He obviously knew Dex would have to keep playing along, so he made a situation where Dex would have to say that Keefe is better than him at something.

"Alright, fine," Dex sighed. "We all know your Mallowmelt is... ugh, bEtTeR than mine!" (A/N: Yes, he said "bEtTeR" like that.)

"Good, now that that's settled, we should go over to Sophie's house," suggested Keefe.

"Uh yeah!" Dex replied. "Bye Mom!"

"Um... okay?" Juline muttered. "Bye boys!" And with that, she exited the room with no remaining suspicions (hopefully).

"You're a great liar," Dex acknowledged.

"Good job playing along!" Keefe exclaimed.

Both boys smiled at each other. (A/N: ALERT! Keefex shippers have been summoned! BEWARE MOB OF PEOPLE IN THE COMMENTS.) They lingered there for a second until Keefe broke the silence by asking Dex, "Why did you wanna hide our little ability switch from Juline?" (A/N: I love seeing the title of something in the actual product, like someone singing the title of the song, if you know what I mean.)

"If she finds out, she will tell the Black Swan and I really want to let our friends know first," Dex responded. "Let's go over to Sophie's and tell her about what's going on."

"Correction: Let's go scare her with our new abilities!"

"OH MY GOD YES."

With that, the boys darted downstairs and leaped to Havenfield.
