♪ Gracious ♪

"He hit her" Lumen said as she drove along the busy expressway.

Honey brown eyes widened in shock.
Lumen had never told her that her father hit her mother, they always had arguments frequent ones, but they didn't seem serious enough for her father to hit her mother.

"Today is a great day to start a creamery don't you think?" Lumen asked turning briefly to Gracious with a smile.
She noticed it, the slight reddening of her eyes as they watered.
"Lumen I'm so sorry" Gracious said holding onto her seatbelt, and squeezing it hard.
She didn't know what it felt like for her father to hit her mother,maybe because she never had one.
Gracious reached out to her best friend over the gear box and squeezed Lumen's hand.

"You will be fine,Your parents will stop fighting you hear? Do you know what it means for Neva and Whitney to break up?" Gracious asked, she shook her head and chuckled as she said,
"Impossible."

"You're right" she said, turning to Gracious with a smile, a fake smile nonetheless but a smile all the same. Gracious returned the smile and looked away from her, watching the trees and houses go by as Lumen drove. She worked her lower lip in worry, thinking of her best friend,The Pink Dessert House was supposed to open today, and she was worried she had put Lumen in a bad mood.

"Lumen are you okay?" She asked, "I was.." the sudden vibration of her phone cut her off, Gracious quickly stole a glance at the screen, wondering if it was him, he hadn't called all night.

Chetachi texted her, asking her where she was, she liked the attention he had been giving her, wondering if there was something else she could give in return.

She wondered if he also saw her the way James did, she would be more than happy to oblige him, being wanted by the fair, compassionate head boy whose responsibility made everyone want to be him would be a lot more than what she had with James.

Lumen was supposed to open the creamery at 8am, Gracious glanced at the phone again lying in her lap her eyes widened in surprise.
It was 10:35am.
As if on cue, Lumen's phone rang the second time,she picked up the phone and answered the call this time.

"Oyinbo pepper, your creamery has not opened? Haba I'm outside o" James said through the speaker.

Shuffling noises were heard over the phone,as he tried to explain how he had been waiting for her since.

"I'll take free ice cream for my compensation, and bring Gracious too" he added before hanging up.

Gracious' heart swelled with joy.
Bring Gracious too. He had remembered her. He actually wanted to see her and not just Lumen or other girls this time around, he wanted her.

Pink Dessert House had gathered a crowd! The news about their grand opening was supposed to be confidential, but had spread to the entire school and beyond.

Gracious came out of the car with Lumen, and hurried over to help her with the baking supplies she was carrying.

James greeted them with his usual melodramatic hyping.
He wore a black sweater and grey shorts, and it seemed like he was bent on distracting Gracious with those legs.

He gave her a little nod of acknowledgement, and bounced over to Lumen, his lips stretched out in a grin.

Lumen was in rush hour mode, she barely answered him, in her bid to set up the place before people started trooping in.
