'hey this is hyunjin, leave a message after the beep!'

the tall blonde looks down at his phone, the caller id reading "chan hyung<3" as he dismisses the notification. hyunjin thinks he should go back inside and apologize. he stands stubbornly on your front porch, gnawing on his lower lip as he tries to swallow the guilt and embarrassment rising in his throat like bile. he digs the toe of his shoe against the wooden floorboard, hands digging deeper into the hands of his coat. it was stupid, really. letting his emotions get the best of him and causing a scene. making the night all about him when he should have been focusing on working to get his best friend back.

why did seungmin have to bring you flowers anyway? he dismisses this bitter thought with shame, working up the courage to take a step forward and knock on your front door. but timing's something thats never worked in hyunjin's favor, especially now when the exact moment he lifts his gaze to knock, seungmin's arm wraps around your waist as he pulls you in for a hug. he watches, through the tiny window by your door, as seungmin nuzzles his face into the crook of your neck, finding comfort in the scent of your cheap perfume and the smell of you.

theres pride, a demon hyunjin has battled, but he loses now as anger bubbles in his chest and he storms into the night without a second thought. of course, you'll always choose him

"you okay?" seungmin whispers, pads of his fingers grazing gently against your cheek to sweep away the hair that's fallen across your face.

"i thought i saw-" you begin, eyes squinting towards your front door, the reflection of the living room light catching a streak of blonde in the otherwise dark night.

"hm?" seungmin encourages you, his eyes falling to the plump of your lips. how long has it been since he's been this close to you?

"never mind." you shake the sinking feeling in your stomach away, something in your gut telling you there's something you missed. you look back at seungmin, smiling sweetly at him and gently patting his cheek.

you hate the way seungmin looks at you, especially now that you can see your own reflection in the deep dark of his eyes. like he could love you. you hate even more how a single glance could mean a hundred different things, each one driving you crazy. you place your hands on his chest to push him away, but his grip on you tightens.

"seungmin," you breathe, eyes pleading with his not to do this right now, not here, not tonight. for a moment, he doesnt move. but he gives in, squeezing your waist before letting you walk away. you shakily walk into the dining area, where all the boys sit in a circle and stare at different points in the room.

changbin is the only one who notices you enter, a smile quickly finding its way onto his face as you walk closer.

"anything?" you ask, hopeful.

chan sighs, turning in his chair to pull the empty seat back for you. "nothing. we've all tried calling but. either his phone died, or he's ignoring our calls on purpose."

"oh please, hyunjin never leaves the house without a power bank, you know this." minho scoffs, crossing his arms across his chest and shaking his head.

"i think we just need to leave him alone for a while." jeongin mumbles from across the table, chin resting on the glass surface.

"first night we're all complete and we're back to missing a person in an hour." felix whispers, and changbin leans over to rub felix's arm.

"i think i liked it better when we were in our junior year. stupid, but at least we were a family." jisung leans back into his chair, looking completely drained.
