"That's right," Taehyung said excitedly, eyes big behind the plastic safety glasses. "And then that goes in there, and wait for it..."

The morning had begun with Taehyung introducing you to his colleagues in the lab, pulling a lab coat round your frame and slotting safety equipment into place on your hands and face. He ran you through how they analysed the drugs, explaining the complicated chemistry involved (not that you could remember any of it, of course). You spent the next few hours being a useless, but much appreciated assistant as he went about his work.

Then, when he was all done and it was only 4pm, he grabbed you by the shoulders excitedly, asking if you had ever seen magic. Confused, but undoubtedly intrigued, you watched as he bounced around the lab, fishing various bottles and powders out of the cupboards as he hummed manically to himself.

Now, here you were. Watching rapt as the Erlenmyer flask in front of you bubbled and fizzed, the concoction inside swirling wildly. Taehyung grinned down at his experiment, anticipation heavy in his gaze.

And then...

Nothing.

Absolutely, anti-climatically, nothing.

"What?" He moved toward the table, fingers outstretched.

"Are you sure you shoul-"

A wicked crack split the air as the flask exploded, sending shards of glass firing out in all directions. The other workers in the lab screeched and dipped below tables, hands up in defence against the onslaught of shattered crystal. You waited for the sharp pain as the glass met your skin. Waited for the blood to start leaking from the lacerations.

But it never did.

At least, not from any lacerations on you.

Cracking one eye open at a time, you came face to face with the back of Taehyung's white lab coat. One of his arms was curled backward and down, shielding you from the flying glass. The other was doing a poor job at protecting the lower half of his face.

Cursing, he turned around to face you, eyes wild as they searched your face.

"Are you hurt?" One of his hands hooked around the curve of your chin, tilting your face from side to side. The other swept your hair out of the way, giving him a clearer line of sight.

"No, I'm-" slapping gently at his hands, you tried to get him to pause; to focus on the spattering of cuts that littered his hand and jaw. "I'm fine. Look at your hand." You latched onto his wrist, turning his palm so that it faced the ceiling. The latex of his glove was in ribbons, thick blood coagulating beneath the blue plastic. "Why did you do that, idiot?" Your eyes flitted back up to his face, where the numerous slashes had started to bleed. They were small, thankfully. Not as bad as the ones on his hands.

The scientists around you started milling around again, returning to conversations with one another. An older man cast the two of you a withering glare as he set about sweeping up the glass.

"Sorry." Taehyung mumbled sheepishly. He looked down at his hand again, lip curling in disgust at the mess the glass had made.

I might not know a lot about the world, but I know that needs dealing with. Pronto.

"Let's go," you said confidently, smacking the button which released the lock on the lab doors. You headed straight for the medics quarter at the back of the room. Glancing behind you, you saw Taehyung nod before setting off after you. The two of you walked in silence, mingling in and out of the gang's staff who roamed the floor of the Pit.

Bright lights and a clean smell welcomed you as you entered the infirmary. The very empty infirmary.

"Hello?" You called out, hoping someone might be hiding under one of the beds, or inside the cupboards.
