"Alright, so let me get this straight." Steve started.
Two round trips to the grocery store and Hawkins Hardware later, Steve and James were walking behind Dustin, trekking along an old railway line in the outer town woodlands, yellow gloves and metal buckets overflowing with chunks of steak. The three of them throwing a trial of meat down on the tracks in hopes to latter lure Dart to the junkyard. Steve was trying to process the whole story about Dart that James and Dustin told him, his mind baffled. "You kept something you knew was probably dangerous in order to impress a girl who... who you just met?"

"Alright, that is grossly oversimplifying things." Dustin shook his head with a grimace.

"I mean, why would a girl like some nasty slug anyway." Steve asked, his eyebrows furrowed in confusion.

"An interdimensional slug?" Dustin retorted, eyebrows raised.

"Because it's awesome." James added. Steve turned to face him with a small sigh.

"You're such a dork." The boy stated, turning back to Dustin. "Well, even if she thought it was cool, which she didn't, I...I just... I don't know. I just feel like you're trying way too hard."

"Well, not everyone can have your perfect hair, alright?" Dustin grumbled.

"It's not about the hair, man." Steve told him. The three moved to walk side by side, Dustin in the middle of James and Steve. "They with girls is just... just act like you don't care."

"Even if you do?" Dustin asked.

"Yeah, exactly. It drives them nuts." Steve advised.

"Says the single man." James scoffed, the two turning to him. "Is that what you did on Nancy, is that why she dumped you? Is that why you turned up to her house with flowers to try and apologise?"

"You're single too dude." Steve defended him, shoving the boy to the side.

"I'm not giving relationship advice." James stated.

"Hey, at least girls I like actually like me too, at some point. The girl you like literally hates you and only talks to you to tell you she beat you in a test." Steve deadpanned, resulting in a shove from James.

"Wait who does—oh yeah, you and Avery." Dustin nodded.

"There is no me and Avery!" James exclaimed, sick of Steve's nagging him about her – something he had been doing since they first starting competing with each other in tests.

"But you want there to be." Steve spoke in a sing song voice. James rolled his eyes at his friend.

"Shut up." James grumbled. "Just go back to giving horrible advice."

"Yeah, so what happens after you pretend you don't care?" Dustin wondered.

"You just wait until, uh, until you feel it." Steve nodded, trying to find a way to best articulate his thoughts.
