chapter ten
leave them alone, billyThe group was now more separated than ever, each of them doing there own thing to try and pass the time from being left alone with no way of knowing if the others were okay or not. However, Avery took note of how Max and Lucas stayed together, the girl's braid still firmly in her hair. The two had taken responsibility of cleaning broken glass.
Avery was still sat at the kitchen table, watching the two before her gaze moved towards Mike, who was pacing the floor with a worried expression. He was too enveloped in his own thoughts and concerns to pay anyone any attention. Avery, due to boredom and the overwhelming silence that had settled across the group, began to hum 'dancing queen' quietly, only stopping when Lucas finally broke the silence.
"Mike, will you just stop already?" Lucas voiced, stopping his sweeping to say what everyone was thinking – Mike's pacing was causing them to stress more than they already were.
"You weren't there, okay?" Mike whipped around, sounding as stressed as he looked. "That lab is swarming with hundreds of those dogs."
"Demo-dogs!" Dustin corrected from the kitchen.
"Jesus, kid, you're really sticking with that." James commented as he, Dustin and Steve walked into the living room.
"The chief will take care of her!" Lucas stressed.
"Like she needs protection." Max scoffed.
"Listen, dude." Steven began, stepping in to diffuse the situation, a tea towel in his hands which made him look very domestic. "If the coach calls a play in the game, bottom line is you execute it, alright?"
"Oh god." James sighed, sitting next to Avery at the table. Both of them knew full well that a basketball analogy wouldn't work on this specific group of kids. And they were proved right when Mike spun around quickly to glare at Steve.
"First of all, this isn't some stupid sports game." Mike snapped. "And second, we're not even in the game. We're on the bench."
"So my point is..." Steven began to stammer, looking around at the expectant faces of the four kids. "Right, yeah, we're on the bench, so, uh, there's nothing we can do."
"That's not entirely true." Dustin began, everyone turning to him to hear his, probably far-fetched, idea. "These demo-dogs have a hive mind. When they ran away from the bus, they got called away."
"So if we get their attention..." Lucas spoke.
"Maybe we can draw them away from the lab." Max added to Lucas' thought.
"And clear a path to the gate." Mike finished, his eyes widening at the thought and Avery could see the hope that he could finally do something to help his friends glimmering in his eyes.
Steve's eyes widened and his mouth dropped, looking around with an incredulous look as he spluttered. "And then we all die."
"Well that's one point of view." Dustin waved him off.
