chapter nine
elevens returnEveryone quickly jumped into action. Theo moved out of the house, quickly running to his car, bumping into Hopper on the way. The two men walked back into the room, following behind Jonathan, Mike, Joyce and Will.
"Get away from the windows!" Hopper barked at Max, Lucas and Dustin, prompting them to scamper away like scared mice. Hopper then reared around on a shaken Jonathan. "Do you know how to use this?"
"W-What?" Jonathan stammered with a gulp.
The chief sighed, pointing at the gun before repeating himself, "Do you know how to use this?"
"I can use it!" Nancy pushed through, catching the gun expertly after Hopper tossed it through the air.
Theo looked towards his daughter, holding the same type of gun out to her. Avery smiled at the man, taking it from him with a determined look before turning towards the window.
The screeching in the distance closed in as they formed a defensive barrier by the window, all those armed standing in front of the vulnerable kids. Avery took a deep breath as she held the gun, sparing a single look at the kids behind them. James did the same as he readied his own weapon.
"Where are they?" Max questioned loudly.
The monsters were surely in the front garden now, if not seconds away from breaking in. A loud thudding noise sounded out, seemingly carrying the creature's howl around to the eat side of the house.
"What are they doing?" Nancy panted, nearly out of breath from the anxious tightening in her chest. They could all feel the tensions rising as seconds ticked by.
A snarling reached the front window causing Joyce to cry out made them all whip around to face the front once again. The animal groaned, almost as if it was in some sort of pain. Everyone looked confused, not knowing if this was a trap or not. Avery watched the window with narrowed eyes and furrowed eyebrows as she tried to figure out what was happening.
Suddenly, one of the creatures exploded the window, eliciting a scream from all those inside. It hurtled through the air, towards where Avery was stood. James quickly wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her back, everyone else also moving away from the creature.
The group waited for it to move, for it to jump up and attack them but it didn't. The creature simply laid still on the floor even as they all began to approach it.
"Holy shit." Dustin breathed out.
"Is it dead?" Max wondered.
Hopper walked towards it, kicking its head to find that it was in fact dead. They all shared confused looks before spinning around when the porch began to creek.
The group watched in equal parts horror and amazement as the lock on the door and latch began to open. No matter how much the others feared what was on the other side of the door, Avery began to lower her gun, knowing it couldn't be any of the monsters.
