"no way." robin crossed her arms and shook her head defiantly.

"grow some balls, woman!" molly laughed and raised an eyebrow at her friend. "of course she's not straight, she plays the trumpet! back me up, steve." she nudged the older boys shoulder, keeping her eyes on robin.

steve nods in an intellectual way. "molly has got a point. you play trumpet, she plays trumpet. you're gay-"

"she's gay!" molly half-whispers, half-shouts.

robin put's a finger to both of her friends' lips. "keep your voices down, i'm pretty sure china heard you two loudmouths." she rolled her eyes and the group began walking away from the parking lot, robin towards her band and steve towards this skimpy-looking-girl.

with molly left there, alone, she branched off herself towards the entrance of the sports hall. however, ms kelly had just caught her attention and pulled her to the side. after a brief chat, molly was now scheduled for an appointment after the game tonight since ms kelly was working late.

as if molly was going to it.

molly's pov:

once you got into the sports hall, you looked around for anybody you knew. you saw steve first with the girl up near the top. deciding not to join them and their dating antics, you kept looking.

you found a few very familiar faces and decided to join them, since you couldn't be bothered with anybody else. as you made your way up there, a few people smiled at you and asked for you to sit with them but with a polite smile and a shake of your head, they left you alone.

taking a seat next to max, you smiled at her friends dustin and mike. "hey, you left early this morning?" you asked your sister.

"yep. school bus was scheduled different for the pep rally today." she said.

"oh." you replied.

ever since billy died, molly and max had some tension between them both. just grief, the councillors would say. but it'd been a year now and no difference. billy was molly's best friend when their parents first got together, maybe it was because he was only a year older than her so it was easy for the two to relate to each other.

however, max was also her best friend and billy just didn't get along with max. at all. once they'd moved to hawkins, things only got worse. billy got a massive ego boost and max was being a usual teenager - rebelling and finding a new group of friends.

then, there was a crack in their friendship as billy and she started hanging out more with people like heather and tommy. however, when he died in the mall fire, molly stopped going out and started losing grip of reality but those people stayed determined to be her friend even if she was giving them the cold shoulder.

then the holidays came and she'd be stuck in her room, alone. no one knew that her family had moved to the caravan site and molly wasn't going to be the one to tell them so nobody came around either. from then, things only got worse.

until they got better. eventually.

after the pep rally, that to be perfectly clear you hadn't payed much attention to apart from when jason had mentioned billy - you had scowled at him and told the people around you and your sister to fuck off, you made your way out the doors quickly and towards the main building of the high school.

you decided that you need to apologise to eddie. you were being a bitch for no reason this morning and you shouldn't have been so rude. though he did interrupt a very cute scenario in your head with that fucking van. cunt.

but it'd be the polite thing to do so you decided to go find the freak.

you saw max heading into the teaching building and before she noticed, you split from her group of friends and made your way to the fire exit round the back of the school. that's where most of the stoners would skip class to get high.

as she finally made it there, she caught eddie mid-light sat next to the doors, below the windows. at first he jumped before realising it was in fact not a teacher. "jesus christ, mayfield." he grabbed his chest, over his heart and dramatically pretended to have a heart attack, leant against the brick walls.

"shut up, freak." you rolled your eyes, sighing as you sat down in front of eddie, with an amused grin. "i came to apologise. for this morning when i was being a bitch." you shrugged, looking away.

he looked at you in disbelief at first, like it was a joke and a group of people are going to jump out with cameras and jeremy beadle was about to bring a mic to his face and tell him he's been framed. "yeah, right mayfield." eddie rolled his eyes, scoffing as he took a drag of his poorly-rolled joint.

"i'm being serious." you defended yourself, eyebrows knitted together.

"fine. well." he began, "i'm sorry for making fun of your bon jovi addiction too then." he offered his joint out towards you.

taking it between two fingers, you smiled and took a couple of drags before handing it back. "i guess i could forgive you, freak."

"do you know my actual name or is it just that you love calling me a freak?" he furrowed his eyebrows together and smiled. you shrugged. his eyes looked at you, as if you were an undiscovered animal. "you know, we've met before. do you remember?"

"no... sorry." you brought your knees to your chest, resting your chin against them and hugging your knees comfortably.

"hey, hey. that's fine. i wouldn't remember me either to be honest." he smiled and looked around carefully before beginning again. "it was your first day here, last year. i was in your maths class and sat behind you, we worked together once."

you tried thinking back before finally getting it. "oh my god, bunny. what happened to the man bun?" you laughed realising the grunge freak with wild hair used to be the quiet kid behind her that always used to wear his hair in a bun.

to be totally honest you thought he was actually a girl sometimes. he hadn't hit puberty properly and got so many voice cracks, and he used to be like six inches smaller or something.

"it got annoying and plus, i prefer my john-bon-jovi-style now. don't you?" he smiled as you looked at him like he was a childhood friend.

"shut up, freak." you laughed. "i didn't think you'd be like this you know?"

"what? you thought i'd be mean and scary?" he smiled, stumping his zoot out as you nodded slightly. "to be real with you, i thought you'd be mean and scary too. i wasn't wrong at first but i guess if you were a mean and scary monster, you wouldn't have apologised. so, i do appreciate it, mayfield."

you rolled your eyes. "my name's molly."

"and mine's eddie, nice to meet you sweetheart." he spoke in a fake british accent as he held his hand out and smiled at you.

this made you laugh slightly into your knees before you shook the boy's hand.

you guess he's alright actually.
