ONE|HAWKINS HIGH SCHOOL

The roar of an engine echoed around the busy car park, bored onlookers watching as a blue Camaro sped through the crowds of students.

Bernadette pushed her sunglasses further up her nose, scoffing at the obnoxious noise as she leaned against the car behind her. She half listened to her brother talk to his girlfriend, Nancy Wheeler, eyes never leaving the denim clad boy step out the Camaro.

"Birdie?" Steve Harrington waved his hand in front of his sister, snapping her attention away from the new boy. "I don't even want to know what thoughts are going through your head."

"You're so funny!" Birdie rolled her eyes at him, grinning to herself as she noticed her two best friends pull up and step out of their cars. "I'll catch you later!"

"Hey, Queen Bee." Valarie Hunt greeted the girl as she approached the pair, pulling her curly ginger hair into a ponytail for practice. Val was the life of every party, her outgoing personality and beaming smile could convince anyone to do anything. Many boys threw themselves at her, all victims to her bright blue eyes and freckles. "You're looking gorgeous today."

"Yeah, I love when you curl your hair." Lillian Grey, Birdies second best friend, complimented her, playing with a curl. Lilly was the quietest of the three but knew everyone and every piece of gossip that floated around Hawkins High. She was the shortest of three best friends but had straight blonde hair that the others were always jealous of while also wishing they could steal her emerald green eyes.

"I've missed you two!" Birdie wrapped her arms around the two, holding them close as they started to walk to class. "I can't believe he actually cheated on me."

Bernadette Harrington was the most well known name in Hawkins High School. She came from a rich background and got everything she ever wanted. Within a month of joining the cheerleading squad she was top of the pyramid and by the end of freshman year she had been promoted to cheer captain. She had long dark brown hair, amber eyes and a smile that could make anyone fall in love with her.

"Eric is such an asshole!" Val agreed, noticing said boy walk past the three with his arm around his new girlfriend. "I just didn't see it coming."

"And with Trish?" Lilly pulled a disgusted face, glaring at the pair. "She's such a skank. I heard she's slept with half of the soccor team."

"She can add another victim to that list." She spat, ignoring the stare her now ex-boyfriend gave her before changing the conversation. "Have you two seen the new boy yet? He is very yum."

"I hope he is as yummy as your brother." The ginger cheerleader said dreamily as she thought about the boy. The Harrington siblings were the most popular pair at school, often competing with one another for the highest status.

Birdie smirked as she spotted the new boy walking in her direction. She caught his stare, a smirk pulling at her lips as their eyes never left one another's. Her attention was pulled away as Val pulled her into the gymnasium.

"Been single for two days and already moving on, I'm proud of you." Val chuckled loudly, grinning widely to herself before going off to greet the other cheerleaders.

"He was hot." Lilly added, giving her nod of approval for Birdie to go after the new boy. "I wonder if he will be at the Halloween party?"

"Everyone will be at the party." Birdie reminded the girl. Halloween parties tended to be the biggest high school party that everyone looked forward to all year round.

The three had their costumes sorted over a month before Halloween, each going as an iconic female artist. Val had decided to go as Stevie Nicks, Lilly eventually decided on Madonna and Birdie instantly knew that she wanted to be Kate Bush.

"Are we still sleeping over at mine after the party?" Lilly asked, starting to stretch with Birdie as they prepared for practice.

"Definitely!" Birdie grinned, quickly yelling a reminder to the group all warming up before turning her attention back to her best friend. "I bought some expensive face masks for us."

"Are we getting ready at yours, Lilly?" Val sat down beside the pair. "Oh, Birdie, you should pick up some weed from the freak!"

"It's rude to call someone a freak because they have different interests than you." She pulled her hair back into a loose bun, standing up to begin the routine. "But sure, I'll find the D&D geek after practice."
