EIGHT|LATE NIGHTS
Bernadette sat up in bed with surprise as she heard the familiar sound of an engine pulling up outside her house. She pulled her curtain open, spotting the Camaro sat waiting for her. She grabbed the jumped resting on the back of her chair, not noticing it was his until she was outside.
"Get in." Billy said with a cold tone, refusing to even look at her as he tapped his fingers along to the song playing through the radio.
"Okay." Birdie sat down in the passenger seat, letting him drive her to wherever he had in mind at two in the morning. She gasped loudly as she noticed the slight brushing on his cheek and his busted lip.
"It's nothing." He stopped her from freaking out, resting his hand on her thigh to distract himself.
"Do you want to talk about it?" She questioned softly, not knowing how to approach the issue. She placed her hand on top of his, holding it tightly.
"What's there to say?" He glanced over to her, finally taking in her half asleep appearance. "I have an asshole father."
"Your father did this to you?" Birdies heart broke for the boy beside her, wishing he had told her it was from some stupid bar fight or anything else.
"How are your friends?" Billy quickly changed the conversation, wanting to get to know her better.
"Both are busy spending time with their boyfriends on double dates and anniversary events." She shrugged, trying to remember the last time she had seen the two. "I'm meeting them tomorrow for coffee."
"That's good." He tightened his grip on her leg, trying to calm down his anger as she tried to distract him. "What were you doing when I picked you up?"
"I was just reading." Birdie shrugged, bobbing her head along to the music. "It's a random romance novel Lilly let me borrow."
"Romance?" He glanced over at her with a mocking look on his face. "Am I not romantic enough?"
"You were being romantic?" She gasped dramatically, smiling as she saw him chuckle lightly at her teasing comment.
Billy suddenly turned the wheel, driving into a random empty field and slamming his breaks on once they were far enough away from the main road. He turned the music off and stepped out the car, waiting for Birdie to follow.
"Are you going to kill me?" She joked, pulling the jumper closer to her body as a breeze brushed over her.
"Don't tempt me." He teased, walking over to a flat area on the ground and laying down.
"So romantic." Birdie rolled her eyes playfully and lay beside him, looking up at the millions of stars in the sky. "Oh, look, that is the big dipper and there is the small dipper."
"You know star constellations?" Billy asked curiously, turning his head to watch her as she stared up at the sky with awe.
"Stars are just so beautiful." She hummed, lifting her hand and tracing the outline of constellations.
"You are beautiful." He mumbled, reaching across and pushing a stray hair away from her eyes.
"That was so cheesy, Billy." She burst into laughter, instantly brightening his mood. "I expected far better from the Billy Hargrove."
"Your eyes shine brighter than any star in the sky." Billy began to recite cheesy pick up lines to her, tickling her waist as he rolled on top of her, holding his weight on one arm to not crush her. "A room brightens up as soon as you walk through the door."
Birdie cupped his cheeks, forcing his lips on hers as she kissed him passionately. Billy happily complied, taking advantage her moaning his name to slip his tongue into her mouth.
"Thank you, Birdie." He whispered into ear, leaving small kisses down her neck. "For everything."
"Always, Billy." She looked deeply into his blue eyes, her heart skipping a beat as a sudden realisation washed over her. She placed her hand on his cheek, wiping away the that gathered in his eyes.
Billy rolled off her, laying on his back as he looked back up at the night sky. Birdie cuddled closer into his side, enjoying the cool breeze that washed over their bodies as she felt her eyelids become heavy.
"Tell me about California." She mumbled, drawing circles on his chest. Billy stroked her hair gently, sending her to sleep as he spoke about the beaches in California, how he used to go surfing almost every week and the many evenings he spent playing basketball, promising to take her to California after school.
