SIXTEEN|LEARNING TO DRIVE
Bernadette sat beside her brother at the breakfast table, both silent as they tried to ignore their parents screaming voices. She nervously played with the chain around her neck, admiring the paper ring that stayed around her neck for safety.
The roaring of an engine startled her as she turned to look out the kitchen window, spotting Billy's blue Camaro rolling up the drive way. She glanced at Steve, knowing he did not approve of their relationship.
"I called him." Steve glanced over at her, smiling when she looked at him like he had grown another two heads. "This fight might last a while, escape while you can."
Birdie quickly understood what her brother meant as she heard rushed footsteps coming in their direction. She jumped out of her seat, running to her room and grabbing her shoes before sneaking out the front door.
"Drive." She sighed as she slipped into the passenger seat, an exhausted expression on her face as she leaned her head back against the chair. "Please."
Billy placed a comforting hand on her thigh as he sped away from the large house, understanding she wanted to get far away from home. He was surprised when Max had told him Steve was on the phone asking for him, quickly dropping all hatred for the boy when he begged him to come pick up Birdie and take her away from the family drama.
"Want to drive?" He looked over at her, a grin on his lips as he removed the cigarette from his mouth and passed it to her.
"What?" Birdie turned her head to stare at the boy with teary eyes. "I don't have my license."
"I know." He shrugged, pulling into a car park. "I'll teach you."
"You want to teach me?" She laughed, knowing how precious his car was to him. Her sleeve dried her tears, a smile now making its way to her lips as Billy shrugged once more. She stepped out the car, eyes darting to the slight scratch marks from the last time she drove his car without his knowledge. "All right, big boy. Teach me how to drive."
"Call me that again and we won't be spending much time driving." Billy smirked as her cheeks flushed red, quickly becoming speechless. "Don't start acting all innocent on me now. I've seen what that mouth does."
"Billy, I swear if you don't stop." Birdie quickly warned him, noticing passerby's had overheard him.
"What? You're going to beg me?" He teased, walking towards her and grabbing her chin, forcing her to look into his eyes. "Get in the drivers seat."
"Right, yes." She stumbled over her words, immediately jumping into the drivers seat as he sat beside her. "Hold on tight." A smirk grew on her lips as she placed her sunglasses down over her eyes. "Big boy."
The engine roared to life, speeding out of the car park and down the quiet roads of Hawkins. Bernadette sang along loudly to the rock music blasting from the speakers, surprising Billy as she knew every word to Creeping Death.
"Careful, Birdie." Billy said seriously, suddenly becoming concerned for his car as he regretted each corner she made. "Watch out for the bird!"
"I saw it." Birdie swerved around the wood pigeon, tapping her fingers on the steering wheel. "Don't worry, baby, your precious girl is in good hands."
"You've definitely shown me that." He rolled his eyes at her playful comment, reaching over to grab the steering wheel and pull her back on to her side of the road. "Focus."
"I'm just making sure you are awake." She laughed, going serious as she drove around the streets perfectly, not wanting to stress him out any further.
Bernadette pulled over, parking the car on a slip road by a field. She turned the car off, unbuckling her seatbelt and crawling on to his lap. Billy bit his lip as she straddled his waist, fingers playing with his shirt collar.
"Does this mean I get you drive your baby more often?" Birdie asked innocently, batting her lashes at him as she cupped his cheeks. "Pretty please."
"Only if you treat her nicely." He patted her ass playfully before slipping his hands under her shirt, stroking her smooth skin.
"I told you I would pay for the dent." She huffed, knowing he was still annoyed about her damaging his car. "But I can apologise in another way."
Billy pulled her body closer, his lips attacking her neck as she giggled in response, leaning her head back to give him better access. Her laughter brought a smile to his lips, pulling back to admire her joyful expression. It was moments like this that he wished he could freeze time and stare at her for eternity.
