Noah's POV
The texture of the green juice matched my hardened glare, the chunks of spinach and banana slushing through the cold glass. My skin felt like it was melting off my body, despite the chill from the fan above us, which was insane for the beginning of November. The leaves were falling and the bonfires on the outskirts of campus were ramping back up.
I'd just swung into this smoothie shop with Madden and had been mentally checked out of the current conversation for at least the last three minutes. Not even the hard conditioning session we'd had earlier could bring me out of my head which was becoming increasingly more difficult to
He however didn't mind. Madden appreciated his own voice as always, grinning as he took a long sip of his piña colada protein before letting the word vomit commence.
"So she didn't say anything afterwards? Wait." He stirred the cup and pretended to stifle the laugh that always 'escaped' anyway whenever it came to serious conversations. Instead of being my friend, he laughed loud enough to startle the mom and kids in the booth behind us.
"Asshole. I should've waited for Naveen if I knew you were going to be such a little shit instead of the slightest bit of helpful." His eyes only twinkled at my glowering. I caught the nasty glare from that same mom in the corner of my eyes and grimaced. Madden, either an idiot or oblivious, slammed his fist onto the table in tune to the high notes of his guffaws.
"My bad. So she chalked it up to 'being in the moment' and then blew the sentiment off which is ten times worse. I guess she's been showered with devotion enough. Probably by greater men... than you."
The smugness in his tone made my fist itch and clench, but I dig deep and ignored his antics. It was getting harder and harder to compose myself and all this shit was pissing me off.
"Fuck you. If I want to shower her with shit or be the definition of devoted - then I will. Besides, this has nothing to do with whatever some other man had done. It's about me."
His eyebrow raised comically. "Yes, my guy is the definition of humbleness as well it appears. No red flags for Zahra to run away from at all." I just reacted at the last part as I propelled myself across the table and grab the nape of my friend's tank top.
His eyes just kept on twinkling with a mixture of amusement as he took a sip from the tip of the straw that sat upon his chin now.
"I have no red flags. Once I get my shit sorted with my family than I'll stop being on... edge." In the corner of my eye, I noticed a group of guys fill in that I recognized from conditioning. They seemed to size me up and I rolled my eyes at the thought of five scrawny freshman wanting a go at me.
It wouldn't be the first time though.
I looked back down at my idiot friend and released my unrelenting grip on him. I laughed as he landed on his ass, the chair he was in crashing onto the ground.
"OW! You don't call that a red flag? You could be gentler, you know that, Noah?" He

I raised my glass up to him in a mock salute before swiftly hitting the exit, the sun blasting as soon as I rounded the corner. We'd ridden over here in two separate cars so I could meet Uncle Sawyer to talk. I dreaded his talks lately and the feeing spread through my fingers as I man handled the steering wheel through traffic.
