The teachers droned on in my early morning classes; mostly introductions and syllables being read off. I only had two classes with Robin and one with Steve, all of them in the morning so it made the classes bearable. Luckily, we all had lunch together.
The bell rang signaling for lunch time. Gathering all my stuff and shoving it into my backpack, I shuffled out of the classroom with the rest of the students. I search around looking for my brother's perfect hair. I sighed when I couldn't see him anywhere, deciding to just walk towards the cafeteria.
Stepping in I see Eddie Munson standing on the table, "as long as you're into band, or science, or parties, OR GAMES WHERE YOU THROW BALLS INTO LAUNDRY BASKETS." At this point, I zone him out as I spot Barb sitting at a table in the corner. Smiling, I make my way over to her.
"How's your first day going?" I ask as I sit down next to her. She looks up at me with a tired expression on her face. "I saw Robin talking to some girl. Tammy Thompson, I think." I squint at her, trying to remember who the hell Tammy was. "Blonde hair, can't hold a pitch, kinda sounds like a muppet when she sings," Barb says. I slam my hand on the table and point at her, "I know EXACTLY who you're talking about." Barb jumps at the sound. "Honestly, Barb, I wouldn't worry about it. Cammie Johnson is a preppy bitch that is 100% straight," I say reaching my arm out to comfort her. "Tammy Thompson," Barb sighs. "That's what I said," I smirked at her. Barb cracked a smile and nodded her head, "you're right. I have nothing to worry about."
I look away from Barb and toward Eddie, who is still giving some type of speech at his table. He always looked and acted so confident. It helps that he's attractive and probably the most kind hearted person I've ever met.

"Detention, Miss Aspen." Tears filled my eyes as I looked towards Mr. Adkins. "Sir— please," I begged. Mr. Adkins held his hand up in protest, "I don't want to hear it."
Tommy and Carol were making fun of me during my presentation, I lost control and yelled a string of curse words at them.
"Awwww the fatty got detention and is crying about it," I heard Carol say to Tommy. Of course Tommy snickered in response.
It was the last class of the day, so as the bell rung I stayed in my seat. The kids cleared out pretty quickly, Mr. Adkins sat at the front of the classroom. "We're waiting on one more student before detention begins." I looked down at my desk in shame.
Eddie struts into the classroom, not even a minute later. "Mr. A, let's get this party started!" Eddie said as he took the seat across from me. Mr. Adkins huffed in response, "you know the rules Eddie. No talking, just work on something and I'll be back in an hour." He then left the room, leaving Eddie Munson and me alone.
"You know, this isn't the first time we've hung out," Eddie stated, looking over at me. I must've looked confused because he continued, "eighth grade, you worked the sound booth for the talent show." I started laughing, "Corroded Coffin, right?" Eddie jumped up with joy, "yes! Exactly, you must be a freak for not remembering." I nodded in agreement and pulled out a book to read.
"Skelton Crew, Stephen King. Is it any good?" Eddie asked grabbing the book from my hand. He flips through the pages as I nod my head, "yeah, I love anything horror." Eddie hands the book back to me, "maybe I can borrow it from you when you're done." I smile, nod my head, and start reading where I left off.
"Hey Aspen?" I hear Eddie call, pulling me out of my book. It had been about 30 minutes since we last spoke. I hummed in response and looked towards him. "I'm not trying to be weird or anything, but you're very beautiful," Eddie states. My eyes go wide and a blush falls on my face, "Munson, that's not fucking funny. Play a joke on another fat girl." I angrily stood up and moved a couple seats ahead of me. Eddie scrambled to get up and move closer, "Aspen, I'm not joking with you. I promise."

Steve slammed his books down in front of me, pulling me out of my memories. I raised an eyebrow at him, "what's your problem?" Steve looked at me, tears springing to his eyes, "Nance said our relationship was bullshit." My mouth fell open, unable to form some type of comforting word.
"Um, I'm going to find her and see what's wrong," Barb stood up and quickly walked away. I bit my lip, unsure of what to say.
"Do you agree with her?" Steve asks me. I furrow my eyebrows, "absolutely not. That was an insensitive thing for her to say." We sat in silence for a couple beats before I stood and held out my hand, "c'mon Stevie, follow me." Steve smiled at the childhood nickname and grabbed my hand.
Steve and I walked across the football field, to the tree line. "Aspen, where are we going?" Steve asked as he dropped my hand. "Don't worry brother of mine, I promise, I won't kill you," I replied walking through the trail. Within minutes we were at an old bench that sat in a small clearing.
"This is where I use to come to smoke weed, figured you could use a break," I said hopping on top of the bench. Steve has never smoked, I didn't think he would right now either, but this was a good place to be to clear your head. I pulled a pre-rolled blunt and lighter from my backpack.
"Where'd you get that?" Steve questioned. I looked at him while I lit it up, pulling a drag, "Reefer Rick. He's in jail now, so his cousin took over his little business." Steve nods his head and I slowly offer the blunt to him. He gives it a hard look before taking it from my hands.
He immediately started coughing after pulling some in. Laughing, I take it from him, "you know you don't have to smoke with me, right?" Steve nods, "I want to. I want to feel okay for a little." I give him a tight smile and hand him the blunt back.
Steve, at some point, laid down on the bench seat. "You know what, Nancy is bullshit. Did you know she couldn't tell me she loved me?" Steve threw his hands in the hair. "Look, I love Nancy, but if she can't even tell you that she loves you, something isn't right in the relationship." I say sitting up. A twig snapped close to me and to my surprise, I saw Chrissy Cunningham standing in the entrance of the path.
"Um, hi guys... Have you seen Eddie?" She asks twisting her hand's together. I look at Steve before answering, "no, is he suppose to meet you here?" She nods her head. "Well in that case, want to hang out with us until he gets here?" I ask, holding up our half smoked blunt. Her eyes grew a little as she took a step forward, "you wouldn't mind, would you?" I shook my head no and moved over so she could sit next to me.
