"Hello there

"Hello there." Wallace smiles at Orla, who is leaning against the wall of the small, white room we just entered, and Riv, who is on the floor, gagged and bound.

Orla just sniffs while she stares at him.

He turns his gaze to Riv as she struggles in her binds. "Now," He says, crouching down to her level. "What do we have here?" He asks, tilting his head with a small smile on his face.

I glance up at Orla with a guarded expression and she meets it with a small nod.

I watch as he pulls down her gag and she immediately begins yelling.

"Hailey," She begins yelling. "You bitch!" She screams before he puts the gag back on her.

"Okay," he grunts before standing up. "A feisty one, isn't she?" He chuckles, turning to me.

"Well," I smile. "She's your problem now." I say before correcting myself. "Well, actually your lab rat." I turn my gaze to Riv and smile even bigger.

"That she is," He begins, but pauses. "The people from the Ark are already being rounded up, so shall we prove your loyalty?" he says, a sadistic smirk filling his face.

My heart goes cold. Shit.

"Currently we have Harper and Monte, but you can choose any of them to harvest." he says, pulling out a tablet and showing us all of my people's names. "But, you must choose and you must be in the room when we do it." He says and my breathing begins to quicken.

"But," I swallow. "Wouldn't you rather just harvest Riv and then take breaks so she can heal?" I offer and he smiles but something tells me that he isn't smiling out of the kindness out of his heart.

"Now, now, now," He chuckles. "I thought that you didn't affiliate yourself with them anymore?" He asks, tilting his head before he hands me the tablet.

I take it and stare at the names. Some I recognise and some I don't.

I have to choose. I have to. It's for my people. It's for me to be able to get access to facilities to help Bellamy.

I find a young boy named Lucas Odel and my heart beat thuds in my ears as I point to him.

"Fantastic," Wallace smiles. "Follow me to the harvesting chamber." he says and I numbly follow him with Orla following behind me.

I hear Riv being grabbed and sedated and for the first time today, I am doubtful.

----------

We arrive at the so-called harvesting chamber, which was really just an observation room for the torture of my people.

"Now," Wallace smiles. "Let's begin." He says into the walkie and the woman in the lab coat with long dark hair nods before grabbing a drill.

My eyes widen but I force my jaw to stay shut. Hatred fills my veins as Orla and I gaze at the pain that the woman is causing Lucas.

I feel Wallace's gaze on me so I force my eyes to narrow into slits as I fein a pensive expression. I tilt my chin upward as I watch with my guilt shoved deep down.

"I see you're enjoying this." Wallace says, getting closer to my ear, which causes a chill to go down my spine and not the good kind.

I force my lips smirk. "Yes," I lie. "I very much so am."

I hear him chuckle. "Well, good." He says before turning to me. "Now, what are you to gain from this?" He asks, his eyes serious.

"Turning Riv in?" I ask, raising my eyebrows. He nods, so I continue. "Well, I want your trust and fortitude."

His eyes narrow. "Trust is earned, Hailey." He says my name and my skin crawls from disgust.

I nod, forcing a smile onto my lips once again. "Then, I hope to earn your trust by spoiling my people's surprise for you."

He stands up straighter, listening for intently. "What surprise?"

"If I tell you, will I have your trust?" I ask him, staring him down. "Complete trust." I finish.

He stares at me before nodding once. "Now, tell me."

"The grounders and my people have merged their armies," I say as his eyes widen. "They're on their way here."

His breathing begins to pick up. "For what?"

"They're coming here for you." I say, tilting my head as a smirk fills my face. "But, I believe that they're on the losing side, so I am here to protect you."

He opens and closes his mouth like a fish for a few moments before nodding. "Very well." He nods to himself. "Given how infamous you are to the grounders, you will make a good guard," He sighs. "So, you and Orla will sleep in the guards chambers tonight, while Riv is stored in the harvesting chambers."

I nod in thanks before turning and following a guard with Orla behind me. I turn to her and mutter, "We need to get in contact with the Ark." She nods before we divulge into silence.

I glance up as a guard walks past us and my eyes widen as I recognise his curly black hair poking through his hat.

"Bell..." I gasp quietly as his eyes stay trained on me before we completely go out of view as we walk around a corner.

I catch Orla's gaze and she reaches over and grabs my hand. "He will be fine." She murmurs. "He has you to protect him." She nods before dropping my hand.

I nod back, pushing the worry and guilt down.

I got Lucas killed today. I sold Riv to the mountain men. And now I'm trapped in with them.

Jesus Christ, I'm at the eye of a shit show.
