Every summer after her college semester is over, Cherry Adams travels back to her small hometown in South Carolina to visit her family. Each summer is the same. Work at the diner, go to the beach, and smoke weed. She expected thi...
I think Ethan knew how much this month has drained me. After finding out about Momma's diagnosis, Olive returning, and Cora running away, I needed a blunt. I think he saw me deteriorating, which is odd because everyone looks at me like I'm so strong, so it's weird when someone notices that I'm not okay. My moms are great parents, but they just don't seem to notice when I struggle because I hide my emotions so well. But, Ethan sees right through me. He's the first person who sees me as if I'm crystal clear.
Since I'm so easy to read, he asked me on a date. I know we've hung out a lot this month, but I don't think we considered those moments an actual date. But, Ethan looked me in the eyes last night and asked if he could do something special for me since I've been dealing with a lot. He told me a date was something I needed to take the edge off. I would have been fine with smoking a blunt, but I haven't been on an actual date in ages, so I thought a date would be a nice change. It definitely will help me take my mind off of things; like Momma flying out of town to go through her first round of chemo.
I wish I could be there for her and Mom, but with our money situation, I can't ask off for a week to fly to the hospital with her. I love our small town, but it'd be nice if we had a cancer hospital closer to us. I just hope the procedure runs smoothly and Momma comes back healthier.
My thoughts don't leave my head as I drive home from work. I'm excited about Ethan and I's date tomorrow, but I just have a lot on my mind right now. But, whenever I unlock the front door and a savory aroma meets me, my thoughts drift away as curiosity takes over me. I know Momma and Mom aren't home, so I have no idea who is here because Cora hasn't cooked a meal for herself in ages. As I follow the trail of the delicious scent, it leads me straight past the living room and to the kitchen where I find Ethan preparing hamburgers.

"What are you doing here?" A grin appears on my face.
I guess I startled him, because he jumps a little and turns around quickly, meeting my eyes. "Shit," he laughs and breathes heavily. "I didn't hear you come in."
My deep laugh is followed by, "I thought our date was supposed to be tomorrow?"
"It was," he puts a hamburger patty in a frying pan that sits on a burner. "I just wanted to surprise you instead."
"How did you even get in here?" I smile.
"Cora let me in. She said she was going out with her friends and then winked at me when she told me she wouldn't be back until tomorrow," he laughs.
"That does sound like something she would say," I laugh with him at Cora insinuating that he and I would be doing... stuff tonight.
I look down at my crusty work uniform and quickly get embarrassed. If Ethan and I do end up doing stuff tonight, I definitely don't want to be wearing this. "Is it okay if I go change? I don't want to wear this on our date."
