Chapter two
"Yo Biggie, you came to school today" I cringed at the nickname and raised up my head to glare at her. Barbara stood at my table, staring at me with a satisfied mocking smile, flipping her braids as she glared down at me. Barbara had always made it her life mission to spite me and throw snarky comments at my face. I had always secretly envied her model like features, she had a thing for showing skin.
Probably because she knew she had a gorgeous body and even more gorgeous facial features, her cat eyes were more defined than the eyeliner she put on and her edges were laid perfectly. If only she was beautiful on the inside. I sighed and looked away, trying to ignored her, I pretended to be occupied with the book infront of me. I wasn't in the mood for anyone, especially her.
But no, she still continued "is it just me or am I beginning to see folds on your belly, seems like you had gotten more fat during the holidays, I'm surprised your shirt still fit" she sneered. I steadied my breathing and hid my trembling fists under the table, internally convincing myself that all she had said, didn't hurt me, i could feel my head throbbing already.
Fatima glared at her " don't you have something better to asides running your mouth" she snapped. Barbara turned to her friends and laughed "abeg! Who this one dey talk to?"
" Omo. How is my fault that your friend is fat?"Barbara sneered. Fatima glared daggers from her eyes and stood up leveling gazes with her.
"Shut up" she snapped, fatima hands tightened into fist. I gently held onto her, trying to get her to look at me. The last thing I wanted was fatima getting into trouble because of me simply because I wasn't strong enough to defend myself."Timah, it's fine" I said softly attempting to calm her down.
" You see, even your best friend knows she's fat" Barbara sneered, sassily flipped her hair and headed away with her friends.
"She's lucky I didn't pull her hair off" fatima grumpily muttered. The rest of the students filtered into the lecture hall followed by the lecturer. The day as usual was beginning to pass by in a blur. With me attending one lecture to another until I was having lunch with the girls. I sipped my soda quietly watching my best friend babbled excitedly to one another, well. Except fave. She was the quiet, reserved one, she just listened.
Fatima squealed in excitement as she listened to what ummi was saying, kristen was doing a horrible job at multi tasking, pretending to listen but she was simply engrossed with her phone, it was easy to tell from the way she had been smiling down at it from time to time.
While el, yeemah and Rii laughed at ummi was saying while munching on thier food, casually chewing. Fave's gaze lifted to me. “arent you going to have anything apart from that?”. I shrugged and shook my head.
“it amazes me how obsessed she is with that stuff, I hate it” fatima gagged. I rolled my eyes, I couldn't tell them that I wasn't intending having anything for the rest of the day, they would try to talk to me out of it.
“i' ll have something, maybe later." I shrugged again. Food was kind of a delicate subject for me right now.Ray
I watched with a bored expression as I watched the two guys argue, playfully pushing each other with their hands.
" Guy no dey tell me that thing" jamal threw his head back and laughed, while Aubrey glared at him in mock anger. The subject of thier argument was even more stupid, who had more instagram followers. Both of them were popular social media figures with an impression amount of followers. Jamal simply liked to tour nice places and restaurants, it was something he usually liked to do.Explore, try something new, try new food, new places. It was no surprise there that people began to take interest to his instagram page. He was obviously good looking after all.
Aubrey on the other side was a model that worked with big brands and fashion agencies. The point is they were both famous, why it was an argument was what confused me. It really didn't have to matter.
" Omo you , you don hear about Jeffery's party" jamal finally changed the subject leaning towards me excitedly. I rolled my eyes, why everyone sulked up to that guy was beyond me, I was in a school ruled by social hierarchy. Even if no one said it.
This was this social status compulsion hanging over of all of us. It was either you were rich or famous or you were dead drop gorgeous or you were smart. All In all, in nile. You had to have something going on for you. If not you were going to fade in with the rest of your surroundings, you were going to subjected to silent humiliation simply because you have nothing going for you.
It was either, you were popular or non existent.
"I heard the guy throws mad parties!" Aubrey agreed. It was no new news that Jeffery's parent were filthy rich. With his parents constantly busy and travelling to different countries all the time, it was no surprise that Jeffery has the freedom to throw massive parties without thinking twice. I still didn't like the guy. He walked about school with that disgusting commanding aura, constantly got into trouble and of course got away and treated everyone carelessly how ever he wanted to.
Jamal noticed my hesitation and sighed. " See, I know you don't like that guy but that shouldn't stop us from enjoying ourselves. Besides it's not like you're going to have to talk to Jeffery or anything, lots of people are going to be there. You're going to be interacting with people"
" Besides how you even wan take see the guy sef, half of the school are going to be there" Aubrey added. I gave in reluctantly, it wasn't like I had anything doing anyways
