Chapter Five
Dory
I watched anxiously as Barbara and her group of friends sauntered over to me. My plans of not being noticed had pathetically flushed down the mud. What I wouldn't give, for me to be able to dissapear at that moment. I knew coming to this stupid party was a bad idea.
God abeg!" Mad o, biggie. So you come party today" barbara widened her eyes in mock shock, while her friends laughed, palm over thier lips. I glared at her, she knew how much I despised the stupid nick name, and yet because she obviously made it one of her life goals to keep tormenting me, she wouldn't stop calling me that. She preferred to spite me.
"Omo, she even wear sleeveless".
" Wetin be this, she think say here be church, see long skirt"" She no fit show skin na, you want make dem pursue her"
" See christian mother arms! Chisos."
I closed my eyes, trying to pace my breathing, willing the tears that was beginning to gather at my eyes to go away.
" Leave me alone Barbara" I murmured." Why are you even here sef? Abeg o we don't want anybody to come and finish our food for us o" she said again and the crowd that has begun to gather, busted into laughter, erupted, spilling and spitting more words to spite me.
I stared at her helplessly, hands lifelessly at my sides as she smirked.
I turned to leave when I felt a hand come in contact with my backside, roughly grabbing."At least she get big nyash sha, how one man go fit handle all this?"
The tears has begun to spill onto my cheeks, burning my face and my insides too. I slapped his hands away and turned back to glare at him.
Jeffery. He stood tall leering at me, shamelessly running his tongue over his lips as the crowd continued laughing.
" I'm now wondering why I didn't notice you all this while, your ass is a killer" he smiled, running his hands over his green tinted hair.
"Shut up!" I spat angrily."She even still get mouth talk"
" Or what?" He stepped forward, coming towards me. My hands shivered in fear as I tried to maintain my glare.
" Leave me alone" I said again backing away from him. Why was the crowd just watching? Why wasn't anyone stopping him from humiliating me like this? Where were the girls?
" You don't have to leave so early. How about we go somewhere private, so that I can show you how sorry I am?"he pushed his body shamelessly onto mine, I turned my face In disgust. His breath stinked with the foul aftersmell of cigarettes and alcohol
" Definitely not into big girls but I like a challenge when I see one, I can definitely handle you" he said again.
I gagged and before he could grab me, his body was hauled forcefully from mine and flunged away from me like a lifeless rag doll."Jesus!"
I looked up to see another guy pounce on top him, his fists colliding with the side of Jeffery's cheek. I could have almost sworn I heard a bone snap. The crowd dispersed in panic.
His fists kept colliding mercilessly with Jeffery's face until he was forcefully hauled away from Jeffery's unconscious body.
He looked up and caught my gaze, his honey brown eyes darkened with rage. His fists stained with blood. I caught my breath. Jeffery's friends began to come at him, one by one. Pumelling him to the ground. I felt my chest wheeze with despair.
As two of them held him down while another pumelled his foot into stomach sending him flying across the ground in pain. There were five of them against him, In an unfair fight.
Till another set of boys broke in tackling the boys that gathered at him. I felt the need to do something, anything. But here I was. Stuck to the ground, rooted in desperate fear. Unmoving.
The fight eventually broke. Everyone was petrified. The crowd was in disarray, running up and about. Screaming and alarm. Yet I couldn't move.I stood staring at him with wild eyes while he slowly sauntered his way over to me. Gripping his abdomen painfully as he winced. I looked to the ground. Jeffery's unconscious body was no where to be seen. He towered over me gracefully. A look of concern melting his face. He was worried about me? Even after going through all that?
"You ok?". I nodded, I felt the nervous saliva clogging my throat and I painfully swallowed. my eyes lingered at his bleeding nose. And without thinking, I grabbed his hand. His brows raised in question and my eyes widened at the sight of our joint hands." You're hurt" I said again. He smiled. My insides exploded in swirls and butterflies of pleasant delight. He looked beautiful when he smiled. I shook my head, what was wrong with me? What was I doing?
" You're hurt" I said again and then nearly facepalmed my self.Dory, don't you think he knows that?
I frowned, my emotions were all over the place,so many unspoken questions lingered between us. Why did he do that? Why did he defend me even at the expense of himself? Why was he being nice to me? And why didn't he look at me in disgust, the way everyone did. His eyes were staring shamelessly into mine, roaming cautiously around my face.
" You're not hurt right?" He said softly.I frowned. He was the one with a bleeding nose and probably a broken rib and he was asking me if I was hurt? I hastily opened my bag and grabbed my handkerchief and wiped it across his bleeding nose, only concerned with making the bleeding stop.
His eyes widened at my gesture and surprisingly he stood still, obediently, patiently waiting for me to wipe the rest of the blood . I could have almost sworn his eyes fluttered close in relief.
" My God! Dory!!! Are you ok?"Fatima frantically hurried to me and engulfed me In a relieved hug. I was relieved to see her too. Her brows rose in confusion as her eyes travelled over to the tall stranger, who stood still silently observing us with a small smile on his face.
" I was beginning to panic, I searched all over for you. Kristen and the girls are waiting. I don't think we should stay anymore, the party's already ruined. It's unsafe. Jeffery didn't look so good when the ambulance picked him up" she began ranting in obvious panic. I saw a trace of satisfaction flash across his eyes and then he turned his back and casually sauntered into the crowd.
