Paul felt his chest tighten, as if he was being held underwater. Unable to breath. He placed a hand over his chest and gasped for air. There was something wrong. He knew it wasn't him, he knew as much because he had been fine a couple of minutes before.
He quickly tried to pull himself together when his phone started to ring. Paul fumbled to take it out, once in his hand he had accidentally dropped it. His hands shaking. Quickly, he picked it up. Emily.
"Yes?" He breathing was still labored. It almost sounded as if he had ran for miles and was on the verge of collapsing.
Emily's voice quickly rung through, her voice shaking. "Paul, I need you to come to the beach. I'll explain everything when you get here. Hurry." Emily almost sounded in tears.
Was that the bad feeling in the pit of his stomach? No. He isn't one to react this way no matter the situation. Paul was a man who was always ready for a challenge, ready to jump into any fight. However, his current condition didn't seem like his usual self. It was almost as if.... Paul froze.
His feet moved before he had the chance to react. He could hear the voices of the people around him but they were muffled. His flight or fight instincts activated along, enhanced with his shape-shifting abilities. His mind, although racing, was on one thing. Hailey.
Earlier that day he had gotten a call from none other than Isabella Swan. She had called to tell him that Hailey was going to visit Emily incase he had wanted to go see her. Unfortunately, he had to patrol the woods with Sam, leaving only Emily and Hailey. They were unprotected...
As he neared the beach he could smell it. He could smell the scent of sickly sweet scent. It smelt as if something had died and was thrown into the woods near the beach. Paul knew better. There was only one thing that could smell like that and escape their patrols, a vampire.
Without a care of his clothes, Paul quickly shifted. His instincts to kill for the protection of his imprint overpowering his rationality. Instead of heading towards the beach directly he followed the scent of death. He tried to resisted the urge to howl, not wanting to alert the vampire but he knew better. They know he was near and he'd be damned if he let them go without a chase.
As such he let out a howl, alerting the rest of the Uley pack of danger. He pushed his legs to run faster and he chased the scent. He's thoughts suddenly interrupt by the flood of new voices. One holding more authority than the rest.
'It targeted Emily and Hailey' he thought. His mouth pulled back, forming a snarl. The rest of the wolves quickly began to curse the vampire.
'Paul, go to them. We will chase after her' Sam's thoughts rung out longer than the rest. This was an order. Paul broke away and headed back towards the beach, breaking through the trees once he spotted Emily and Hailey. Paul ran up to them.
Hailey had finally stopped trying to pull away, she was gone. She had ran away but why? Why would she suddenly leave if she wanted to hurt her? Did this woman want to torment her? Make her tremble in fear her whole life? If that was her goal then she had achieved it.
Emily spotted Paul, still a wolf, and ran over to him. She looked at him and glanced towards Hailey who was now quiet in her arms. "She stopped struggling a few minutes ago...do you know why?" She asked almost softly.
Paul looked at Hailey and gently nudged her foot with his nose. He could smell her soft scent, feel her slightly warm skin of her ankle. Finally, he nodded at Emily. He slowly pushed her indirection of her home.
Emily started to move, knowing what he wanted to do. They had to get out of there before anyone saw Paul. Everything was now alright since they had him there. They had his protection and that of the rest of the pack. Emily rubbed Hailey's back, feeling her flinch.
"It's okay now, Hailey." Emily muttered at her. Emily, however, did not hear anything from her. She knew she'd have to be there when Bella and everyone else explained this. There was no way she'd leave her alone.
When they arrived, Emily put Hailey down on a chair and went to grab Paul some extra clothes. Once she had delivered them to him she walked back over to Hailey. Emily kneeled down to look at her. "Hailey?"
The younger girl felt a chill up her spine causing her to shiver. Not saying one word. How could she? She did not know what was going on. She just knew that some woman was following her around.
Soon, Paul entered. He crouched down to Haileys height. "Hailey? It's me, Paul." This finally caught her attention. She looked into his eyes, her small hand grabbing his and squeezed his. She still did not say a word.
The door slammed open and Bella ran in, panting. "Hailey!" She ran up to her, looking at her for any sign of injuries. After confirming that she was unharmed she hugged her tightly.
This was the last straw for Hailey. The small girl once again began to cry. Her small arms wrapping around her older sister. Her small voice echoed in the once quiet home as she finally let out the fear that was consuming her.
Bella teared up as well, her eyes stinging. The heavy weight that was on her shoulders finally released. Bella was trembling. She had been so scared. As soon as she had hung up the phone with Emily she began to think the worst. She..She had thought she would lose the most precious person in the world.
Paul saw that Bella was about to fall so he quickly held her and to make sure she didn't accidentally fell over with Hailey on her arms. Now, Bella was on her knees, Hailey pulled close to her chest. She quietly muttered apologies into her ear.
Emily placed a hand on Paul's arm and gestured towards the door. It was their cue to leave the sisters alone for a bit. Paul slightly hesitated but as soon as he saw the tight grip that Hailey had on Bella's shirt he knew it was okay.
Hailey wanted to stay with her sister, to have her close. Although she had said she hated Bella, she knew it was a lie and this moment proved it. Even though Bella had left her twice, she knew that Bella loved her more than anything in the world. This hug had proved just as much.
