There was an awkward silence that hung around the large home. Everyone stood around the open living area as the small girl sat on the luxurious couch, a lollipop in one hand and a bag of cookies in the other.
The silence was broken by Carlisle Cullen who cleared his throat, a sign that he was about to begin. "Hailey, I assume Bella and my daughters have introduced you to everyone?" His voice soft and comforting.
This did nothing to Hailey as she looked up at him with a nod. Not one word coming from her even after she had arrived almost half an hour ago.
Rosalie sat next to her and leaned down to whisper in her ear even though everyone could hear her clearly... everyone except Bella. "Hailey... are you really not going to speak?"
Hailey looked up at Rosalie, removing the candy from her mouth. "Not until Paul gets here." She said before placing the lollipop back in her mouth.
This caused everyone to sigh internally. It seemed at even unknowingly the two had somehow come to an agreement to make everyone as uncomfortable as possible. Though it seemed intentional on Hailey's part.
Bella glanced at Edward as they communicate silently. She widened her eyes subtly, shaking her head as if to say that she had no way of making her speak. At least not without Paul present.
Emmett, who stood behind Rosalie, leaned down and held out a piece of fruit to Hailey. Not a single word uttered between the two but still Hailey ate it happily.
A few seconds passed before Esme rushed out of the room, patting Carlisle on his arm. Only to return with Paul by her side.
"Hailey." Paul called out which made Hailey forget about Emmett who had been feeding her. She rushed towards him, hugging his legs.
"Paul!" She exclaimed happily with a small giggle. Everyone mentally let out a sigh of relief knowing that Hailey would finally speak with them.
Paul grabbed her hand and gave a small head nod at everyone, his nose scrunched up at the strong stench that came from them. He, however, did not voice his discomfort for the sake of Hailey.
Carlisle approached Paul and held out his hand to him. "It's a pleasure to have you here." He said politely as he awaited for Paul to return his greeting.
Paul glanced down at Hailey and noticed her watching his every movement. This forced Paul to take Carlisle's hand and return his pleasantries. "Yeah..." He muttered before letting go of his hand and picking up the young girl in his arms.
"If we may begin." Alice spoke up from her place beside Jasper who held her close. His face buried against her neck for a moment before he looked up at Hailey.
"Hailey... this is Jasper." Alice patted Jasper's hand before gesturing towards Carlisle. "That is Carlisle, our father." She pointed at the two men. "Emmett and Edward."
