XI: CHAOTICUS
"As your luck would have it, being the Goddess of Fortune, also implies control over one's misfortune," Jin explained, his voice filled with humor. He was the only one in the room enjoying this. "I do imagine it was the tea she cursed. Which means she just cursed Namjoon, the God of Chaos with misfortune. Now, that's going to be a fun combination."
"Seriously, Bitna, what the f-" Namjoon's words were abruptly cut off as he flinched in pain and wiped at his lips. "I bit my lip! Are you kidding me!? I can't even talk!"
"Perhaps it is best if the two of you don't move, don't talk, and don't attempt anything at all, really," Jin warned.
That would be easy enough. If I sat on the floor at a safe distance from Namjoon, what was the worst that could happen? My left calf tensed up just as I finished the thought, the muscle spasming torturously. I howled in discomfort and reached out to grab my leg, too roughly, breaking the skin with my nails. Beads of blood began to trickle down my leg. This was getting absurd. Even if I sat here utterly still, I was still liable to choke on my spit, suffocate, and die.
Jin was thoroughly amused by mine and Namjoon's misery. I'd like to think it was because he knew that ultimately nothing catastrophic would happen to us, outside of a series of unfortunate inconveniences. His eyes were watering, and his laughter was echoing through the room. It was so contagious it helped to lighten the dreadful mood, and I couldn't help but smile. Jungkook, on the other hand, was far from entertained. He looked downright scary, scowling at Bitna as he cracked his knuckles.
"Reverse the curse, Bitna," Jungkook hissed. "Or so help me Gods, I will tear you apart limb from limb without an ounce of mercy." His eyes were glowing a fierce purple, entirely filling his iris. It was distinctly different than the last time I'd seen his eyes flood with power. He was letting his emotions overpower him.
"Why should I?" Bitna pouted. "It's just a prank!"
"Do you seriously want to test whether or not I'm serious?" His power was manifesting outside of his body. Smokey black clouds of energy were swirling around his hands and wrists.
"Why do you care so much!?"
"Now, now," Jin intervened. "Bitna, leave." His command left his mouth like a jolt of electricity.
"I will leave," she replied in an eerie, robotic tone, unable to resist Jin's order.
Jin waited until she was safely outside of the club before turning to Jungkook. "Please don't fight me on this. Do. Not. Follow her."
"Do you expect me to just leave the two of them like that? Bitna did this- that means she needs to fix it." Jungkook was pushing against Jin's outstretched arm, the only barrier holding him back from chasing after Bitna and making good on his threat.
"I will command you to back off if that is my only choice," Jin spoke through pursed lips. "It is in all our best interests that I am not forced to do so. We need to save our energy for tomorrow night, or someone much worse than Bitna will be more of a danger to us...to Y/N."
Those words seemed to bring Jungkook back down to reality, as his face softened ever so slightly. "Will the effects of the tea wear off naturally?"
"Yes. This isn't like one of Yoongi's curses. Bitna is nowhere near as powerful, plus, they barely drank any of it. You know that- you just need to regain control of this situation."
"Whatever. You're in charge of Namjoon." Jungkook stepped over to me and picked me up from the floor without any warning, carrying me in his arms bridal style. "We will be in my office."
The journey to Jungkook's office was terrifying, only because I was certain he would somehow drop me despite his firm grip on me. That fear was the only thing stopping me from dying of embaressment. Thankfully we arrived unscathed, and he was able to set me down on the couch gently. He leaned back against his desk as he looked over me. His eyes were back to their normal coffee-colored hue, and the tendrils that had been snaking their way up his arms had dissipated. Still, his mouth was turned down into a permanent grimace.
"Are you okay?"
I nodded. "I believe the strength of her magic is impacted by her proximity to the target she curses. I can already feel it fading from within me."
"Why did she even do that?" He moved to sit beside me. "Did you get into an argument or something?"
"No, I think she has a crush on you," I snickered. "She told me all about how long you've known each other and how close you are. I imagine she wasn't fond of seeing another woman next to you."
"You find this funny?" He raised one eyebrow.
I brought a hand to my mouth to hold in my laughter. "Well, yes. Now that I'm not actively getting attacked by all the bar décor, that is. I just don't see why she felt so threatened by me."
Jungkook's eyes narrowed in on me as he ran his thumb across his jaw. "You don't?"
His expression left me puzzled. "No, I don't."
"Should I make it obvious?" He cupped both sides of my face with his hands.
The sensation of his skin against mine, coupled with the dark look in his eyes was making my heart race. What was this feeling? It was something I felt often with him and had chosen to ignore. I wasn't so naïve that I didn't realize the effect he had on me was something unnatural. He always approached me, touched me like this, without a lick of hesitation. Like it was second nature to him. Was I the only one feeling weak in the knees?
"I- uhm, I don't know what you're asking me..."
He closed his eyes briefly and let out a small chuckle before pulling his hands away and folding them back against his chest. "I will explain it to you clearly next time, so prepare yourself."
"Uh, uhm, okay," I struggled with my words.
Part of me was relieved that he backed away, but part of me was disappointed, too. He was growing to be someone immensely important to me in a way I couldn't describe. It was different from what I felt towards others in my life that I cared for. I wanted to be closer to him. I wanted...him. Was that wrong of me?
"Let's rest here for a bit until you can no longer feel the presence of Bitna's magic, and then we can hopefully fit in a short lesson with Taehyung before it's time to open to the public." He stood and turned his back to me. "We need to be prepared for anything tomorrow."
I cleared my throat, bringing my mind back to what I should've been focused on- the mission. "I know it hasn't been long since we've been working on our skills with Taehyung, but I think we've both learned a lot about our abilities already. I'm confident things will go better this time."
"They have to," Jungkook replied, turning to me with a half-hearted smile. "I'll be sticking much closer to you this time, so if I notice anything off, I'll step in."
"Promise me you won't step in too soon. I can protect myself."
"Yeah, sure," he waved me off. "That's my role in this- to protect you."
"And my role is to actually find out some bit of information for you," I rolled my eyes. "So, give me the chance to do so. I'll step back if it becomes too much for me."
He clicked his tongue. "Fine."
