XXIX: HOMECOMING
A familiar, and yet foreign somehow sight greeted me as I stepped into the courtyard of my family home. It hadn't changed. The same white rose bushes lined to cobblestone pavement up to the enormous wooden front door. The same over-the-top fountain standing in the center of everything, lit up with warm yellow lights. The same quiet stillness, as if the house was a decoration, not a place where people dwelled. The difference now- I had a huge group of people wheeling their luggage up to the front. It wasn't going to be quiet for long.
"Oh, you're rich rich, huh?" Jin cackled. "This is nicer than Jungkook's high-rise."
"Not me," I scoffed. "You've seen my apartment. It's average at best."
"Don't let her fool you," Jimin laughed, elbowing me in the side. "She's an only child so this is her guaranteed inheritance."
"I'm not going to be able to afford my place much longer if I keep having to close down Solanaceae," Jungkook scrunched his mouth.
I felt awful that it'd come to this, but it was true that we would be safer here than anywhere else. Siwoo had not fulfilled his goal of taking down Jungkook, and I wasn't about to let it happen. Until we could discern how to deal with his newfound immortality, we had to play things safe. Safe meant staying at my family home with my mother in as large of numbers as possible. Anything other than that was secondary.
Joining Jungkook and I was Eunji, Jimin, Jin, Taehyung, and Yoongi. Bitna and Namjoon had decided to stay with their family. They lived on a rather large compound with some of the heftiest security in the entire city. If anyone was rich rich- it was them. Hoseok wouldn't be staying with us either- his duties at the hospital were too important for him to take time away. It was scary to think that he'd be all on his own, but I had to hope that he'd be safe surrounded by throngs of sick and injured human mortals. Siwoo couldn't be so heartless to attack him there.
My mother was waiting for us in the entryway, pacing back and forth. Her unusually frazzled state was hidden away the second she recognized our presence. "Welcome. I am glad most of you are here. You will likely be Siwoo's first targets, so it's important that you don't wander off alone."
"Well, that's one hell of an opening statement," Jimin snickered. "Thanks for having us Mrs. Choi...er Iseul?"
"Iseul, please."
"Where should we stay?" I looked to my mother, pointing to the group behind me.
"Your room is still the same as you left it, so you can sleep there," she noted. "There are four other bedrooms open, so I imagine Eunji can take a room and the five men can split off the remaining three rooms however they please."
Right. She didn't have a clue about mine and Jungkook's relationship. Us sharing a room would be strange. Again, it just wasn't the ideal time to reveal that particular detail, so I would have to deal with it. "Thank you."
"I am not sleeping with Yoongi," Jin quickly spoke up. "I will take anyone else. Literally."
"Whatever," Yoongi snorted in response. "I'll do everyone the favor of taking the individual room then."
"What's wrong with how Yoongi sleeps?" Jimin asked curiously.
Taehyung rested his hand on Jimin's shoulder. "Trust me- you don't want to sleep next to the God of Dreams. Unless, of course, you want to dream the same dreams as him, which happens to be some downright weird shit sometimes." Taehyung cocked his head to the side. "Roomies?"
Jimin nodded. "Yeah, you seem the most normal."
"I take offense to that!" Jin shouted. His face then fell, likely when the realization that he'd be bunking with Jungkook hit. "Oh, you've got to be kidding me..."
"Why do you look so upset, huh?" Jungkook narrowed his eyes. "Is there something wrong with me?"
"Yeah. You're scary."
The rambunctious chatter was unlike anything I'd ever experienced within these walls. I couldn't help but giggle, fondly watching them bicker with one another. I should've been on high alert, but they were making my anxiety melt away with their silly antics. They were so important to me; it was difficult to define what they meant to me. Perhaps...family. They'd become my family, and I would die before I allowed them to get hurt.
The excitement settled down as we all made our way to our respective rooms. Just as my mother had said, mine was exactly as I'd left it. Pale sky-blue walls, a fluffy white bed decked out with countless pillows and blankets, a small glass desk littered with pictures and books. It even smelled the same, an incense of mine burning on the dresser- cedar and clove. It seemed she'd prepared for my arrival. A thoughtful sentiment that left me feeling oddly wistful.
"You have a beautiful room. Pure and bright. It suits you," Jungkook commented quietly from the doorway.
"Come in," I beckoned, patting the spot next to me on the bed.
His eyes narrowed in on mine as he took his seat, a frown playing on his lips. "Why do you look so sad?"
"Not sad," I mumbled. "It's just been ages since I've been back here. The fact that my mother welcomed our huge group with open arms...it's making me wonder if I've been too harsh with her."
He leaned back and looked to the ceiling, letting out a deep breath. "It's hard to say with family, parents especially. Sometimes their methods aren't the greatest even when their hearts are in the right place. More so when you're raised as a God."
"The expectations can certainly be suffocating."
"I think she's putting in an effort, Y/N," he said placing his hand over mine. "So, if it's what you want, and what you feel comfortable with, why not let her in?"
I nodded and gave a light smile. "I think it is what I want."
Jungkook leaned all the way back, pressing his weight onto the mattress. "Now, then, I did come here for selfish reasons initially. What do you say to sharing your room with me?"
I swiftly shot him a dirty look. "Are you trying to get us caught? I haven't exactly disclosed our relationship yet."
"I won't do anything unchaste to you," he smirked. "I'll be quiet, and I'll go back to my room before sunrise."
"You promise?" I held my pinky out reluctantly.
"I promise." He linked his finger with mine. "I would rather not share a bed with Jin when I have you just a few doors down."
"This is a temporary truce," I warned. "I'm allowing you to sleep here tonight for Jin's sake."
I began unpacking my belongings, what little I had brought along. I was optimistically hopeful that this would be a short-term stay, even if my gut was telling me that it wouldn't be. Figuring out how to kill a God was one thing, figuring out how to kill an immortal God...that was paradoxical. But someone somewhere had to know something, and even if they didn't, it had to be written in a tome. Anything. Everything has it's checks and balances. Even immortality.
Jungkook had returned to my room quicker than I'd anticipated, dressed in a pair of navy silk pajamas and slippers. He'd entered quietly, closing the door behind him with as little noise as possible so as not to alert the rest of the sleeping guests. At least he was keeping his word about being discreet. Plus, I couldn't exactly say I didn't want him there next to me. Of course, I did. It was the one place that I felt safe in the midst of all of this madness.
"You can go ahead and sleep. I'll be right there. I l just lost track of time, so I need a quick shower," I hummed, grabbing a set of pajamas from the dresser drawer, and making my way towards the bathroom.
"I'll wait up for you."
