XXI: BLOODLINES
Yes. Mother dearest was a member of the Divine Council, and one of the most powerful Goddesses in existence. The Goddess of Life. It wasn't a secret that I was trying to hide; it'd just never come up in conversation until now. My mother and I didn't have a sour relationship, but we weren't exactly close. She was the head of our household, the leader of our bloodline, and that meant she didn't have much time for much else. She always felt a bit cold, but I attributed that to the weight of the duties she carried for our family. At first, I resented her for her absence, but as I got older, I began to understand how difficult her role was.
"Hmm...I knew you had to hail from powerful bloodline in order to hold the abilities you do, but I never imagined you were the daughter of someone on the council," Jin hummed. "I suppose you and Jungkook have more in common than you may have known."
"You have someone in your family on the council, Jungkook?" Jimin questioned.
Jungkook rubbed his forehead, perhaps irritated by Jin's overshare. "I did- my father. Not anymore."
"The role didn't pass to you?" Eunji asked shyly.
"It doesn't always work like that." Jungkook sat back down across from me. "It's a possibility in the future, but I don't know if I want something like that. Anyways, it's not important right now." He looked to me. "Y/N, can you help with this?"
"Yeah...I can," I replied with hesitation. "Let me go make a phone call."
I walked out to the balcony for some privacy and pulled my phone from my pocket. Scrolling through my contacts I reached her name- Choi Iseul. Another reminder of the distance between us- it was often more comfortable to call her by her name than to use the term 'mother'. Though I'd never do so to her face. It was incredibly awkward for me to be asking her for a favor, but I hoped to keep the call short and to the point. Transactional.
The phone only rang once before her voice came through the line. "Y/N?" She seemed surprised to be receiving a call from me, the most emotion I'd heard from her in a long time.
"Hi, mother," I struggled with the words. "I'm calling to ask for your assistance with a private matter."
"Interesting." Her voice was back to its indifferent tone, concealing whatever thoughts she was currently having. "What is it?"
"I have concerns about a God I've recently encountered that I believe needs to be brought to the Divine Council's attention. I was hoping you could get myself and the Gods who have been partnering with me an audience."
There was a moment of silence, as she pondered over my words. "I need more than that, Y/N. Elaborate."
"His name is Siwoo and he's experimenting with regaining his immortality."
"Ah, the God of Retribution," she hummed. "He's always been a vile God, but a quiet one who kept to himself. I didn't expect him to break the rules so blatantly. Do you have proof?"
I was amazed that she knew his title just from hearing his name. In all of our time researching Siwoo, we'd never even found out such information. I suppose that's the sort of knowledge that comes with being a Goddess of the council. Oh, to be a fly on the wall of one of those meetings.
"I have proof," I spoke confidently. I had to for her to take me seriously.
"I will set up a meeting for tomorrow and send you the details."
"What will you do to him?" I asked curiously.
There was another long pause. "If everything you said is true the sentence will likely be death."
"Is it that easy?"
"A flick of the wrist. Goodbye then, Y/N."
"Goodbye...mother."
She spoke of killing him so easily, without a hint of wavering. Was that what it was like to hold a position of power amongst Gods? Was it burdensome or was she proud of her work? In spite of everything, I wanted to understand her better. All I'd ever wanted was to be able to speak to her as her daughter. It just seemed impossible to cross the invisible line drawn between us, one that she'd drawn herself. I wanted to believe it was for my sake that she'd done so, to keep me safe. That belief was all I had to tie me to my family, my bloodline. To not resent her.
I returned to the room, forcing a smile to my face so as not to put the strange mood I was in on full display. "We have an audience with the council tomorrow. We just need to prepare all of the evidence we have."
Jungkook looked up at me and frowned, before turning back to the group. "Y/N and I will handle that. Why don't you all get some rest and then we will meet back here tomorrow morning?"
No one argued with him, their exhaustion evident from their mumbled farewells and sluggish movements towards the door. Once the last person had made their exit, Jungkook plopped down on the seat next to me and rested his hand on my knee. "Something is wrong?"
I opened and closed my mouth, unsure how to respond. I chose honesty. "My mother is somewhat of a stranger to me. It was weird to speak with her."
Jungkook intertwined his fingers with mine. "When my father was around, it was the same for us. It always felt like he was grooming me to take his place, so I felt more like his employee than his son."
I snuggled in closer to him, resting my head against his arm. "I know it must've been difficult for him, like I'm sure it is for my mother...but it is tough for us as their children, too. Someone has to play that role though, right?"
"Would you ever consider it?"
"Joining the council? I don't know if I could live with making the decision of whether or not someone lives or dies based on their actions."
"I've considered it, but I have similar concerns." He let out a chuckle and leaned his head against mine, trying to lighten the mood. "Plus, now I have something I want to give all of my attention to."
I giggled, smiling from ear to ear at his words. "I'd like that."
Jungkook stood and held his hand out to me. "Why don't we call it? We can figure things out in the morning. I just want to lay next to you for the rest of the night."
"Only lay next to me, God of Stamina?" I teased.
He narrowed his eyes at me and clicked his tongue. "Are you screwing with me? Do you know what you're getting yourself into?"
I ignored his hand, standing up on my own accord and brushing past him. "Do you?"
Toying with him and seeing his reactions was amusing. Something simple and freeing when I just wanted to forget the chaos of our situation. Plus, the side effects of teasing him and getting him all hot and bothered were quite wonderful too... Our playful banter usually ended with us in each other's arms, or an even more precarious position. After having a taste, I wouldn't be mad if it ended up that way tonight. Not a bit. It was hard to think of much else once tangled up with him.
