    Drip. Drip. Drip

The sweat hit the pavement in droplets. Shoyo could feel the sun's rays pounding down onto his freckled skin.

"Natsu. We must go back to the house, or I will die." Shoyo panted.

It was currently the beginning of August. The Hinata siblings were lounging around the park at Natsu's request, but to Shoyo's dismay.

Natsu whined, "But there's nothing to do at the house!"

"Well, at least there's air conditioning there."

The two kids headed towards the Sakanoshita store, where the cool air practically beckoned them inside. The sliding doors released a wall of cold air, and Shoyo's and Natsu's sighs of relief echoed throughout the store.

"Close the door! I don't cool down the outside!" The young adult male, who they called Ukai, yelled.

Shoyo quickly grabbed the hot, burning handle and pulled the door closed. Natsu ran off to the snack aisle where candies lay. Shoyo ran for the back counter where the refrigerated products sat displayed. He went for a raspberry slushie and a meat bun. Shoyo went to turn and find Natsu when deja vu blinded him.

Kageyama was browsing the ice cream and popsicles when he felt eyes boring into him. He turned and saw the familiar tuft of orange hair, short stature, and freckles. Kageyama stared down at Shoyo, who smiled at him.

"Kageyama, what are you doing here? I thought you couldn't come over this summer?" A hint of sadness punched through Shoyo's tone.

"Do you not have other friends?" Kageyama asked, "besides, I said I wouldn't be allowed to hang out with you."

Shoyo's heart dropped a little, "But who's stopping you? You seem to travel alone anywhere you go."

"My family. I thought this was obvious; they don't want me to hang out with you."

Shoyo stared at the unmoving, blueberry-colored eyes and turned around, huffing.

"Come on, Natsu, we are not wanted here." Shoyo would admit he was being dramatic, but he hurt on the inside.

Shoyo paid for both of them and returned to the August heat. He could feel Kageyama following them in hopes of explaining himself.

Shoyo didn't turn around as he yelled back at Kageyama, "Stop following us."

All he heard was, "I don't plan on it."

The slight stalking continued for a few blocks before Shoyo and Natsu arrived at the park. He put Natsu into a swing set and began pushing her.

Kageyama began, "Shoyo, you know I can hang out with you. It just isn't approved by my parents."

Shoyo's footsteps hitting the sand were the only thing heard as he abandoned Natsu to finish his conversation with Kageyama. "I haven't even met these people. How would they know if I was deemed worthy enough to be in your presence if I've never met them?"

"It's because of your blood." Kageyama stated in a obvious tone.

Shoyo's heart dropped a little. He didn't know why his blood would matter, but at the tone in, which Kageyama uttered those words, he knew it wasn't good.

Kageyama continued, "My family knows you're a muggle-born, a wizard who doesn't have any magical relatives."

"Why would that matter?"

"Old magical families like that despise muggleborns because they believe they don't deserve magic or possibly even stole them from other wizards."

"How is that even possible?"  Shoyo muttered,

"I don't know! Stop asking stupid questions." Angrily throwing the words out, Kageyama backed away like he was going to leave, but his feet stayed planted.

Shoyo did not want to aggravate Kageyama with simple questions, but his mind was eating away from questions. The one thing that stuck out in his mind was the status of his blood. He had never spoken to anyone about his father, mainly because he was in the dark too. The thought of even opening up to someone about that made Shoyo's mouth warm with saliva and his head lighter than a feather.

The silence stretched between the two for a few awkward moments. Shoyo never let interactions he had get too uncomfortable like this, nor would he let it stay that way.

"Do you know any muggle sports?" Shoyo quietly asked.

"A few." Kageyama raised his shoulders in a shrug.

"Have you heard of volleyball?"

Kageyama's eyes lit as quickly as a dog hearing food. "Yes, I know volleyball."

Shoyo's mouth stretched in a smile, "Okay, give me a minute while I run and grab the volleyball."

"Shoyo, the sun is setting!" Natsu yelled, urging them away from the impending darkness.

"One more rally, Natsu!" Shoyo called back, setting the ball to Kageyama, who spiked it into his exhausted face.

"You got to stop receiving with your face." Kageyama mocked,

Shoyo immediately popped back up, not taking the offense intended. "One more!"

"Nope. I have to get home, and I can't take any more of Natsu's whining." Kageyama tossed the ball back to Shoyo, turning in the opposite direction of Shoyo's home.

"Okay, can we do this again tomorrow?" Shoyo cheered, hoping for a yes.

"Probably not. I was out for too long today, and my parents will say no. Don't expect this all the time." Kageyama stated in a monotone voice.

Shoyo sulked as Kageyama picked us his pace, becoming more of a speck by the minute.

"Shoyo, I am going to start walking without you!" Natsu yelled.

"I'm coming, Jesus!"

—————————————————————————
Shoyo didn't see Kageyama for the rest of the summer after the volleyball game, and quite frankly, the rest of August left Shoyo and Natsu bored, yearning for an adventure.

The upcoming school year was enough for Shoyo to feel excited, especially when Professor Takeda was taking him to Diagon Alley the following day.

"Get some rest, you two!" Shoyo's mother called from the kitchen, the clank of dishes muffled by her booming voice.

Shoyo climbed into his bed, opening his nightstand. Shoyo kept his wand next to him for safekeeping; he looked at it every night before bed. It reminded him of his other life outside the muggle world, the more exciting one. Closing his nightstand, Shoyo turned to his side as he gazed out into the star-filled sky. His eyes slowly closed as his breathing grew softer.

Buzz...buzz...Buzz.

A distant humming awoke Shoyo from his slumber with an occasional clunk of metal. His eyes widened when he realized it wasn't the hum of nocturnal insects. Shoyo grabbed his curtain, pulling slightly to peek out at the disturbance.

A light blue Ford Angelia drove towards the subdivision in the air. It almost effortlessly floated along the dark horizon. Shoyo predicted it was heading for the infamous Potter residence. Its slowing descent near Privet Drive confirmed Shoyo's suspicions. He knew sneaking out was dangerous for him at this time of night, and now that he was a wizard, who knows what could be waiting for him? Shoyo decided against opening his window and making a break for it, so he slowly sunk back into his cool sheets.

Shoyo listened as the droning of the Ford Angelia faded away after a few minutes. He fell asleep wishing he had thrilling adventures like Harry Potter. The following day felt like a fever dream. The Ford Angelia's slight motor playing in his mind, overriding the chewing of his Frosted Flakes. Shoyo was only pulled from his mind when a tiny knock echoed on the wood door. He knew who was patiently waiting behind the door, Shoyo pondering last night for a few more moments before he ventured to the door and greeted Professor Takeda for their seemingly routine visit to Diagon Alley.
