Mia's POV

I have to get out of here. It's only been a week, but I already feel like I'm losing my mind. If I had known that being friends with the seniors my freshman year would turn into this my sophomore year... Let's say I wouldn't have been so nice with Cole. A part of me wished this was some cruel joke that they missed out on last year, but it wasn't. The house he kept me in is dirty. The windows were boarded shut. I can't pry them off with just my bare fingers. The chain stays on my ankle so it's not like I can go very far. My skin underneath the chain is red and raw from being rubbed against so much metal. Let's get one thing straight. I hate being here, but since I am, I hate it worse when Cole is here with me. At least, I don't have some sick maniac talking to me in a condescending tone all day.

Cole has been working on a project on the second floor of this house. I'm not sure what he was doing. I asked once but he said it was a surprise. This whole kidnapping was a surprise. He's delusional. I need a way out so I can get to the police. I'm sure my family and friends are looking for me. They wouldn't think I ran away or anything. I missed my whole family to pieces. I finally get a real family that accepts me and I get taken away. Let's not give up hope. I'm not going to just sit here missing everyone that I love and just wait to be rescued. I have to try to escape. I've been trying to find a way out of this ankle cuff all week. I can't do it because Cole was smart enough to take a bobby pin out of my hair. I'm in the middle of the room so I can't reach anything to try to smash it.

"Mia, darling! The surprise is ready!" Cole sang as he walked down the stairs. I cringed but realized to see the surprise he'll have to unchain me! I can try to fight him off! I did a happy dance inside of my head. I didn't want him to think anything was unusual with me being happy or accepting that I'm going upstairs.

"Is the surprise you're letting me go?" I questioned, looking over at him. He chuckled and shook his head no. "Why would I do that after all my hard work upstairs?" He questioned rhetorically as he kneeled down by my chain. I felt anticipation flow through my body. "Just waiting for you to get some decency," I lied. I was ready to do this. I had to feel no remorse. When the thing released my ankle, I took a second to breathe out. The area looked infected from being there all week without being able to breathe or get proper treatment.

I had to wait till I was on my feet when he didn't expect anything. I allowed Cole to help me stand up but I was weaker than I realized. I lived off one water bottle and one sandwich a day for the past week. I clearly didn't have the same strength I used to. I was hit with a dizzy spell and it took me a second to compose myself. "Are you good?" Cole asked concerned. I scoffed and rolled my eyes. "I would be if I wasn't kidnapped," I remarked. He opened his mouth to reply but I punched him right on the nose. His eyes closed in pain and took a few steps back. I didn't hesitate to run- well half limp over to the door. At the start of the week, I tried to slide my foot through the chain or try to yank it out of the floor. Clearly, it's not helping at the moment.

I put my hand on the door and tried to open it but the door was locked. "Shit," I cursed. I turned around to see Cole right there. "Not so fast-" I kneed him in the groin before he could finish his sentence. Cole's eyes widened as he fell to the ground. I ran over to the window and picked up the chain that was on the floor. Let's hope I don't get glass on me. I hit the window with the chain but it only bounced back. I had to take a step back so the chain wouldn't hit me in return. "That's impossible," I whispered my voice cracking. Before I could do anything I felt arms wrap around my waist. "No!" I thrashed around in Cole's arms. I wasn't sure how he managed it but he got me up the stairs and he dropped me on the ground. "Ouch," I muttered and lifted my head. I looked around and realized what was around me. It was set up like a mini apartment. It didn't look like the gross abandon room downstairs. I stood up on my feet and looked at him. He seemed proud of himself. I wanted to wipe that smug smile off his stupid face.

"Welcome home, darling. The fun has just begun," Coke smirked at me.
