"Riley, how long has it been since you talked to your friends?" Mr. Matthews asked his daughter. Riley was sitting in the bay window. Looking out on the sidewalk seeing Mia and Maya talking and laughing with Amara and Joseph. She wondered where Lucas and Zay were.
Riley looked from the window to her father and just shrugged. It's been a long time since family game night. She regrets her actions but doesn't know how to fix this. "If you miss them why don't you go and say sorry?" Mr. Matthews suggested. "Sorry isn't gonna fix this dad. I left Mia out of family game night. I acted like a child because I lost my boyfriend. I thought every first relationship would last like yours and moms." Riley admitted.
"I thought Maya and I would've been the next Cory Shawn but it's not. The next Cory and Shawn is Mia and Maya." Riley sadly admitted.
"That's not true." A voice said. Riley looked shocked that Mia was standing in her doorway next to her father. "You texted her?" Riley asked. Cory shrugged, making a weird face, then ran away. The two girls looked at each other. It was silent. "You know for the longest time it was just Lucas, Zay, and I. Now us three are the next Cory and Shawn." Mia added that second sentence as a joke. It caused Riley to give a light smile.
"But it was hard moving to New York and accepting the fact that it wasn't just me and my boys anymore." Mia admitted. "And I had to adjust to getting some new team members. Which wasn't easy but somehow became the best thing in the world." Mia told her.
"Life is changing." Riley nodded, remembering a conversation in middle school about it. "Life is changing and we will too. No matter what fights we have even if you don't consider me family.. You're still a part of mine. Families fight Riley. Friends fight. No ones perfect." Mia told her. "I'm really sorry Mia. I consider you family. I didn't know what I was thinking at the time." Riley started to explain. "Yeah well it's time to start thinking and mature. Things are changing, we can’t keep protecting you from certain stuff.” Mia told her. “How can I fix this? Tell me and I’ll do it.” Riley pleaded.
“I don’t know. You have to figure this out yourself.” Mia then left. Leaving a sad Riley behind. Mia headed back outside to her friends. “How’d it go?” Maya asked Mia. “Let’s put it this way life doesn’t revolve around her anymore and she still has to accept that.” Mia shrugged. “What are the plans for today?” Amara asked, changing the sensitive topic. They all looked at each other. Then suddenly their phones all buzzed or beeped. “Party at Emma’s?” Lucas asked them. “Who’s Emma?” Joseph asked. “Head cheerleader. Very popular.” Mia answered.
“First real high school party anyone?” Maya asked. Most of them all agreed excitedly except Joseph. “I can’t go tonight. You all have fun though and be safe.” Joseph gave a sad smile. “Why can’t you go?” Lucas asked. “I have some family visiting. Having a huge partido. Parents want me home.” Joseph explained. They all nodded understanding. “Hey Amara, do you want to get ready with Maya and I before the party?” Mia invited. Amara looked shocked but nodded yes with a huge smile.
Mia and Maya linked arms with Amara. “I have a perfect outfit for you in my closet and a party is the perfect place for you to wear it. If you’re comfortable wearing it.” Mia told Amara. “You’re just gonna hijack my girl?” Zay asked, referring to Amara. “I’m no one's girl Zay. I don’t remember anyone asking me if I could be their girlfriend.” Amara called back to him. The three girls waved bye to the boys and walked into the building up to Mia’s apartment. “She told you.” Lucas laughed with Farkle slapping Zay on the back.
“Come on men. Let’s go to the gym and workout before the party.” Zay faked flexing his muscles. The boys have been helping Farkle become stronger because he doesn’t want to be a small twig anymore. They’ve been regularly going to the gym since sophomore year has started and sure enough Farkle has been happy that he is getting somewhere. Upstairs in Mia’s room Maya was changing into a dress and Mia was doing Amara’s hair. “I love your curls. I’m envious.” Mia admitted to Amara. “It’s so much of a hassle though.” Amara admitted.
“I’m stealing this.” Maya pointed to the dress she was wearing. It was Mia’s black skater dress. “How about you borrow it whenever you want but it’s still mine?” Mia raised an eyebrow at her. “Deal!” Maya twirled in front of the body length mirror. “Thanks for welcoming me into your friend group. It means a lot. I was really depressed before I started hanging out with you all. I had no friends here before you all. It means a lot.” Amara admitted.
“Amara we’re happy we met you.” Mia reassured her. “Yeah you’re a part of the group now and I don’t like people outside the group.” Maya grinned. They all laughed and went back to finish getting ready. When they didn’t realize their laughter was heard by Riley in her bedroom right above Mia’s.
That night Mia was wearing a dark purple skater dress with black flats. Maya was wearing a black skater dress with two inch heels. Amara was wearing a black and blue jumpsuit with some short heels. It hugged her body perfectly. Mia walked in with Farkle she was holding onto his arm, showing everyone he was taken. Amara and Maya walked in together arms linked. Lucas and Zay were behind them. The party was in full swing. “What’s that?” Farkle asked. “That’s alcohol.” Mia answered as her friends looked at the table with unopened beer bottles.
They all looked at each other. “It’s alright to have one or two just to loosen up and have a fun time. Just if you want to end up like that guy over there?” Mia pointed to a random student dancing on the counter tops. “Then you drink as much as you can.” Mia laughed. “Have you ever drank before?” Farkle asked. “No, because I always had to take the subway train alone after the parties I went to last year. My friends took a different train then I did.” Mia admitted. “My folks would kill me if I drank.” Amara admitted. “Same here.” Lucas and Zay said in sync. “I don’t know what my parents would do.” Maya looked at the bottles. “We don’t need it to have fun though. Just remember don’t drink any drinks from strangers and don’t drink something that was already open.” Mia told them.
The rest of them agreed to that. “Come on let’s dance.” Mia grabbed Farkle’s hand. He didn’t take a step forward with her though. “What’s wrong?” Mia asked. “That’s not the same dancing like at school dances.” Farkle looked at their sweaty classmates. “Yeah so?” Mia asked. “I can’t dance like that.” Farkle shook his head. “Farkle you don’t have to dance like they do. I’m certainly not gonna do that!” Mia pointed to a girl twerking on another girl. “You don’t have to dance, I can’t force you. Just remember you know how to dance and it doesn’t have to be that.” Mia pointed to the crowd of students dirty dancing.
“I’ll dance with you.” Maya linked arms with Mia. Amara and Zay were already dancing. “Sounds fun.” Mia smiled. “You can join us or you don’t have to but I wanna dance.” Mia kissed Farkle’s cheek then left to dance with Maya. “Who are you texting?” Farkle asked Lucas. “What? Oh no one.” Lucas shoved his phone in his pocket. Farkle didn’t question it further but knew he was lying but who would Lucas be texting that he would lie about?
