An ear can break a human heart
As quickly as a spear,
We wish the ear had not a heart
So dangerously near.

"No, no, Emily," Amy pushed Emily away, "We can't do this."

"I thought you loved me, you said so yourself," Emily said, hovering over Amy, close enough that Amy could feel her hot, breath on her face.

"I do— I just— this is going to fast, Emily," Amy stared into Emily's beautiful, mesmerizing eyes.

"You're right," Emily agreed, "Let's go on a date then."

Amy stared up at Emily and watched Emily's determined eyes stare back.

"I can't do this," Amy tried to squeeze out from between Emily and the wall she had been pushed up against during her passionate kiss with Emily after a few moments of silence, "I— I am not even supposed to like girls, I will meet a man and shall marry him, not live my life bound by love to a female, a person I cannot even marry."

Emily stared at Amy, "Okay," she let out gently, watching as Amy's hand reached out to the handle and turned it, gently shutting the door after her once she got out.

Emily knew what Amy was feeling, she felt it too, with Sue. And now with Amy, and so, she couldn't understand why she had just let her go.

Open the door and pull her back in, just one small kiss.

The voice in her head told her, run. Emily didn't run.

Perhaps this was for the better. Amy was a traditional girl, she would never date another woman. Perhaps this would save Emily some heartache.

Emily slowly descended the stairs, it seemed as if no one even noticed her sudden disappearance. She watched as Amy seemed to fit right back in, as if nothing had happened whatsoever. She watched as Amy laughed and smiled along with the others, she watched her face long enough to memorize every feature, from the adorable scrunched up nose to her delicate hands gripping tightly onto her dress.

Perhaps this was what was meant to be of her, a distant  admirer, always, stalking in plain sight, watching with adoration. With Sue, with Amy.

Amy looked up at her, still standing on the stares, looking at Amy with a longing expression. The way that Amy held her gaze seemed to tell Emily everything she needed to know. Amy did love her back, but they could not be, and so, Amy left. Emily understood.

Emily walked up the stairs once again, delicately, careful not to make a noise in order to not inform her family members. She lay in bed, tired and changed out of that suffocating dress.

The noise seemed to have died down, the people had left and she was sure her mother would come upstairs to scream and reprimand her for not being there to send the guests, especially George off. It was worth it, to get lectured in order to avoid the awkwardness and George.

She heard a muffled protest, telling her mother that she was sleeping and was not to be disturbed for something that could be saved for the morrow. Her father, it seemed, because later that night none visited her, and her mother only ever listens to him.

Amy walked down the stairs, immediately, the feeling of regret washed over her. She should've stayed, after all, she had truly loved Emily, despite their lack of communication, the connection was instant and something that could never be replicated in a million years. A pity, a shame, a mistake. She never should've closed the door behind her.
